... father was over there. (40) Even though Ray does not directly lie, he is certainly not being honest. In another part of the story Ray lied to a security guard saying that he had taken pictures of him sleeping a few nights ago. He really took some beauties of you, I said. (149) First Ray snuck onto the course at night and barely avoided trouble.

Then when he was about to get caught for the second time, he lied and got his way out of it. He should of admitted it and took the heat, not lied like a weasel. Also in the story when Ray was trying to get into the Mayflower and to look around to possibly get an idea to be able to play on the course, he lied about the places he had previously been a caddie. Out West, six seasons in Cherry Hills in Denver. (85) Ray took a perfectly good job away from another person that might have really needed it. He lied about his qualifications for the job and even made up a fake name that he took the job under. Secondly, Ray is an immoral person because he fails to display the value of wise judgment.

In this book, Ray made a lot of bets, a whole lot of bets. He won the majority, but when the odds are against you, and you still make the bet, it is considered to be bad judgment, even if you do win. Even though is father was a member of the club, he did not want to call him and ask to play. With the insight that the two others had in winning this bet, it was Rays bad judgment to take the bet and possibly lose $ 1, 000.

Bank, I said. (40) This quote is another way of saying Im in, meaning that Ray was in the bet for everyones $ 1, 000. Another bad bet that Ray decided to take was the one he made with Two Down against Concorde and his father. His father and Concorde clearly had the advantage and Ray went ahead and made the bet anyways. One reason he made the bet was to try to help Two Down, but if he used better judgment, he could have worked out a better deal.

When he was trying to provoke his father into the bet, he said, The numbers crunch just right, dont you think? (214) Ray is challenging his father to the match by asking him if he wants to win all that money because his father is very greedy. When he agreed to the bet he was in deep enough, but then he, in a sense, raised the stakes. What is he, crazy? Ray also failed to use wise judgment when he snuck onto the Mayflower Golf Course at night.

What was he thinking? With the guards that they have there, he had a better chance of getting caught than getting away. When he suggested the idea to Hoover, he responded, You want to play at the Mayflower Club, maybe the finest and most exclusive course in that country, at night? (68) Finally, Ray is an immoral person because he fails to display the virtue of respect for persons. When Ray makes a bet, he will do whatever it takes to win. No matter who gets hurt of disrespected. Also when Ray is helping a friend, he will hurt anyone except the friend he is helping.

This is good for the friend that he helps but bad for anyone else who gets in his way. Ray shows us this when Two Down is in a little bit of gambling trouble. He tries to catch Concorde cheating on his wife so he can bribe him not to make Two Down pay. Then he tries to recover actual pictures of him cheating.

When Ray is aiding Two Down in retrieving these pictures, Two Down says to Thug, Any flammables of the happy couple. (186) Two Down was telling Thug to find any pictures of Concorde and another woman, not his wife. Thug was the one hiding in the closet taking the pictures because Ray had helped Two Down plan to catch Concorde in the act. Another time that Ray showed no respect for persons, is on most Friday nights, when him and Dannie got together and did their thing. This shows no respect for Dannie because he said that they never talked or went out, she was used for pleasure purposes only. They would say things to each other such as, Well you aint bad, for practice. (9) Ray never showed a shed respect for his father throughout the entire book.

Maybe it was true that his father was responsible or his brothers death, but Ray needs to learn to forgive and forget. I know it is not easy to forget the death of your brother, but it doesnt mean that he cant talk to his father, or play golf once in a while. One of the last things that Ray said to his father before Travis died was, Its a long slow deal, I said, it might take a long time. (102) Ray is implying that it is going to be a long time before he can forgive his father for the death of Travis. In conclusion, Raymond Lee Hart is an immoral person because he fails to display the virtues of honesty, wise judgment, and respect for persons.

As stated earlier, Ray does a lot of moral things in this book. He helps his friend stay in town and keeps him from moving away and starting his life again. Even though he does a good amount of moral things in this book, they are certainly outweighed by the number of immoral things that he does. I dont think Ray should be a role model for me. His excessive gambling and sex sets a bad example for all young children and even some young adults. His behavior does not deserve to be looked up to in the least.

Some might argue that the compassion that he shows and the loyalty to his friends should be considered good and he should therefore become a role mode, but I disagree. I advise people not to look up to or use Ray as a role model at all. I hope that no one ever reads this book and says that they want to be like Ray. Bibliography:
