In the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, the boys on the island were attracted to Jack s group because of three main reasons. One of the reasons they joined was because Jack offered safety and protection from the beast. Since most of the boys were rather young and immature, safety was an excellent offer. The young boys also wanted freedom, as all young children would rather be free then under supervision. Jack offered freedom with very little or even no boundaries. Finally, the boys were also offered food, something they didn t often see while being part of Ralph s group.

In this essay I will prove that the boys joined Jack s group because of offered protection from the beast, freedom and food. I think the most important reason for joining would have been for the safety and protection. The only threat that the boys were exposed to was the beast. Since the boys did not realize that the beast was inside each and every one of them, they were quickly persuaded to join Jack s group. The beast only represented fear, and wasn t real, but Jack offered complete protection from this beast, and therefore most of the boys quickly switched groups. Jack said that the beast could be fought off, and his hunters could easily take care of any problems involving this beast.

Jack also implemented that Ralph was a coward, by revealing that Ralph was afraid to go up the mountain when the location of the beast was revealed. This deed convinced many of the boys that Ralph was a coward, and made them think that only Jack was brave enough to face the beast. Jack also boasted that Ralph did not posses any hunters in the group, therefore it would not be impossible to face the beast. So, once again Jack was at an advantage. Ralph had no solution towards solving the problem of the beast, mainly because he continued to try and convince the boys that the beast wasn t real. But none of the boys believed Ralph, so Jack was heavily favoured.

The second most important reason for joining Jacks group was the freedom. While Ralph was leader, the boys had many jobs and tasks, and also had to constantly obey rules and responsibilities. For example, the boys had to respect the person holding the conch, and only the person holding the conch was allowed to speak. The boys were also forced to fulfill certain tasks, like gathering water and building shelters. But, seeing as these boys were just children, they would much rather do whatever they presently feel like doing as opposed to their required task. Only Jack presented the boys with such an offer, he said in his tribe there wouldn t be any rules.

He said that the boys could do whatever they wanted to do, including hunting and playing. I think the reason for such an offer coming from Jack means that he never fully understood the seriousness of the situation. He seemed to be ignorant, and in this, he found bliss, and therefore offered it too all the boys as well. Through choosing to be ignorant, he misguided all the boys, but no one seemed to really care. Whenever Ralph of Piggy tried to present the situation, Jack would always ignore it, choosing not to believe it. The last factor is joining Jacks tribe was his offering of food.

Many of the boys became very thin because of inadequate food they were offered by Ralph. Jack offered that his hunters would retrieve all the food for the tribe, and no one was even obligated to hunt for their own food. Or so Jack made it appear that way. But, Ralph had very little food to provide for his group, so such an offer could not be turned down easily. There was once catch to this offer however, and it was that the boys would only receive food if the boys joined the group. In perspective, Jack was bribing the boys into joining, as it was obvious that the boys had not eaten in a very long time and were very hungry.

In conclusion, the boys choose Jack s tribe because he offered free food, protection from the beast and freedom. It isn t hard to see why the boys would have chosen to join Jack s group, seeing as how they are all children. The older boys chose Jack s tribe because of ignorance, seeing as how Piggy constantly reminded the boys of how they needed to keep fire going, but nothing was done about it. By joining Jack s tribe, all the boys hoped to drift as far away from the adult world that was full of responsibility, and enter a safe world of complete freedom.
