Lord Of The Flies Golden s View of Human Nature Upon reading the critically acclaimed novel, Lord Of The Flies, By William Golden I became increasingly conscious of Golden s views on humans and their nature. His debatable point of view is quite apparent, in that he believes humans are inherently bad. Although this, is in my opinion quite debatable, throughout the novel it arises often and cannot be ignored, that is why in this fantastic, epic, groundbreaking, amazing, stupendous extraordinary, sublime, wonderful, grand, astounding, awe inspiring, invigorating, bewildering, marvelous, remarkable, literary masterpiece I plan to illustrate examples, brick by brick of his incredible fortress of ideas concerning this statement. It is my humble belief that this novel is but a simple tool of Golden s to incline the reader towards his opinion that human nature is in fact one of malfeasance and evil.

Perhaps the most obvious of these illustrations is the part of the novel in which Simon the Christ like figure makes the acquaintance of the Lord Of The Flies, who is quite simply a symbol of the primordial evil inhabiting mankind. Proceeding his confrontation with the evil in all humans, Golding has Simon try to spread his message of the evil to the others in an attempt to cease their reverting into evil, primordial beings. Yet parallel to the life of Jesus Christ, Simon is killed in a disgusting tribal ritual performed by those who have in fact already succumbed to the power of the pernicious beast (representative of Satan. ) Also in the novel we see that in succession from those who contain the least amount of goodness to the most turn to the darkside 1. This is blatantly illustrated by the fact that Jack, Roger and the other hunters are the first to go. Yet the good characters (Ralph and Piggy) (nearly) fall prey to this later, as illustrated on page 166 by the quote, Piggy and Ralph, under the threat of the sky, found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society. During the scene where they go to the feast on Jack s beach.

Perhaps another portrait of evil in Golding s mind is the sickening ritual of the hunt, which eventually nearly all of the characters in the novel take part. It is my belief, judging by the vocabulary used in his description that Golding finds hunting to be one of the most sadistic / evil rituals of mankind. Their practicing this atrocious art is also a blatant analogy for the fact that all humans are susceptible to becoming savage and evil. Finally I wish to acknowledge why it is that Golden may have selected an island as his setting for the novel. Based on my above theories I believe that I can without a doubt hypothesize that the island is merely an analogy for the rest of the world. Which of course suggests that what was done on the island can and possibly will become a reality for our civilized society given the right circumstances (i.

e. : nuclear war. ) Therefore to conclude, based on the examples above, I can safely say that William Golden, is under the illusion that the human race, under the right circumstances, such as isolation, instinct, greed and jealousy (as portrayed in the Lord Of The Flies) would turn to their, primordial animal like urges and thus turn to the so-called Darkside. Therefore is it too risqu to venture that all of us humans have a capacity to become just what we fear most, uncivilized beasts, who revert to our primordial selves 1.
