Lord of the Flies What is mans human nature? Is it order and government or is it chaos and anarchy? The general question is this is man good or bad? According to William Golding mans human nature is defective, corrupted, basically bad. In his book Lord Of The Flies, Golding clearly demonstrates what he believes society's human nature is. Lord Of The Flies may seem like a story about some kids who happened to be wrecked on an island but Golding wrote it to mean much more.

Golding sets up the perfect situation to test what mans human nature really is. And through the use of many examples he clearly shows the reader what he feels our human nature is. In the movie Species, after a half human, half alien being is killed, a women says I wonder which half was the predatory half. According to Golding it would be our half. For instance in his book Lord Of The Flies the last section clearly shows this. Jack, who represents anarchy, and most of the other boys on the island, is hunting Ralph, who represents civilization.

The fact that almost all the boys have become loyal to Jack and are now engaged in a man hunt to kill Ralph lets the reader see what Golding's view of human nature is. We are the predators who kill each other. In the last section the boys are rescued by a ship that happens to be a cruiser. This is somewhat ironic in that the boys in the middle of a manhunt become rescued by an adult, because adults appear dignified, and capable. Yet the fact the that the ship that rescues them will be used to do the same evil which the boys were doing on the island shows us that we are not as dignified as some would like to think. Golding is simply pointing this out to his readers with a little twist in order to show how deteriorated our society has become.

Throughout Lord Of The Flies we see how when separated from a ruled society our human nature is to become killers. When the story begins Ralph and a few other realize how important it is to keep rules and order. However as time goes on, we see how the beast of our human nature takes over and we become savages. An example is when Simon is confronted by the lord of the flies.

It says to him how foolish he was to think that the beast could be killed or stopped. Here Golding is showing us that even though we try to live by rules the beast of our human nature will inevitable come to surface as it does with the boys. Another example is in the way the boys become more and more concerned with hunting than with creating huts or keeping the fire going. After the first pig is killed hunting becomes something the boys admire.

They continually, especially Jack, grow more fixed on killing. It comes to an extreme when they kill Simon. But the boys show virtually no remorse for their fallen chum. They have had their human natures take over their logical thinking and have now become assassins. Golding is simply showing us how actually soiled the society which we live in is. Golding's view of human nature is one, which is correct.

People are in general bad. All the examples which are provided in his book are what humans would do when exposed to a situation like that. We as people are killing each other. Look at past years, wars like WWI, WWII, Vietnam, the Korean War, and Star Wars, which probably would have caused us to kill our human race had it broken out into nuclear war.

Although we may try to become civilized and seemingly have been succeeding at it we can never escape the beast in all of us.
