Innocence or Ignorance In the book Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the boys were innocent at the beginning of the book, but towards the end of the book their actions started to turn into ignorance. It started with about two dozen boys on a plane that crashed on an island because of the war that was going on. They all survived the crash, but were stranded on an island with no parental supervision. In the book Golding splits the boys up.

Most of the boys turn into savages, but some like Ralph and a few of the younger children try as best they can to keep their innocence. The situation is like good versus evil. Ralph tries his hardest not to participate in any of the savage acts, but finds it hard to survive without going along with it. So he gives in a little bit and kind of participates in the dance ritual around the fire.

The only problem with this was during the dance ritual the children beat another child, Simon, to death. Throughout the entire book savage acts such as that happened, but escalated throughout the whole book. Golding made it clear to the reader that things like this happened throughout the book. At the beginning of the book, they were scared to kill a pig for food. Near the end of the book they were killing each other and hunting one another. The more one read the book the more the reader realizes that each day these children that are participating in these salvage acts are losing their innocence and their childhood.

It seems like in away the boys minds have been tainted by the long stay away from home. Everyday that they had to spend on that island with no parental supervision they had to become more like savages to survive the obstacles of living on their own in the jungle. Also, there was nothing they could really do to change their actions because they have been away from civilization for so long that they lost their sense of humanity. Lastly, control and power became a key factor to them because the more power they had the better off they were for surviving. Even if surviving meant killing someone. After awhile of being on the island they started to have no guilt.

This is mainly a result of having no consequences and being able to do what they want. They just stopped caring about the well being of one another. Since it was a fight for control and power, it ended up turning into a violent fight for survival. They adapted to their habitat after awhile and started to live like animals without a care in the world except for being attacked by a stronger force. Towards the end of the book nothing really mattered to some of the boys. Mainly the boys in Jacks tribe.

Since they were the only ones on the island who had no obligations for anyone but themselves. They were not responsible for the other children, they were only responsible for feeding and surviving themselves. Also, they started to lose their innocence because each day mattered less to them. It was one more day that their hopes of being rescued were tarnished and they became more like savages instead of becoming decent human beings and young adults. All of these thing have to do with losing their innocence. Every time they did not take responsibility for their actions, did not have any guilt for what they have done wrong, nothing mattered to them those were the times they started losing their innocence.

After ever little incident they lost their innocence and soon enough it added up to too much and they had to turn into adults. As a result of that, they will never have the same childhood again. That is the moral that Golding tried to send to the reader in this book. That no matter what one does, they must always try to do the right thing and take responsibility for what they did, or before they know it they will be adults and be forced to take responsibility.

Lastly, Golding is trying to say that people can be good or evil. Some people act sane under the pressures of life and other people turn into savages because they do not no how to express their feelings.
