Who Is Politically Correct? Even though the two essays Are You Politically Correct? by John Taylor and What Campus Radicals? The PC Undergrad is a Useful Specter by Rosa Ehrenreich have a few similarities, they are extremely different in many ways. John Taylor, born in Yokosuka, Japan to diplomat parents is a political columnist for New York magazine and educated at the University of Chicago and is very conservative.

Rosa Ehrenreich, born in New York, educated at Harvard and Oxford and presently attends law school at Yale and is not as conservative as Taylor. Although they both describe the same account of what happened to a professor on a Harvard campus, the two stories of the actual account are different. They also have different views on fundamentalism in this country, and they use different forms of invention to persuade their readers. First of all, the two essays describe two different accounts of what happened to a professor at Harvard.

In the essay, Are you Politically Correct? , Taylor describes a professor at Harvard University who was accused by his students of being a racist. Using pathos, Taylor describes to the audience about how the professor walked through the campus that spring, down Harvard's brick paths, under the arched gates, past the fluttering elms, he found it hard not to imagine the pointing fingers, the whispers. Racist. Making the audience feel sorry for the professor, Taylor then uses ethos to persuade the audience that the professor is not a racist because of his tenure and because he has won prizes and published numerous articles and four books and edited the Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups. The status of this professor, however, has nothing to do with the fact of whether or not his is racist.

Taylor stated that the professor dropped the course after he decided that it would require a tape-recording system worthy of the Nixon White House to tape all his conversations with his students in order to prove his innocence. In the essay What Campus Radicals? The PC Undergrad is a Useful Specter, Rosa Ehrenreich decided to answer back to John Taylors essay which she strongly disagreed with. Instead of using rhetoric, however, she used real facts to prove that political correctness is not the campus issue it has been portrayed. She describes the same professor as being racially insensitive because he stated to the class about how black men, harboring feelings of inadequacy, beat their female partners. When questioned about his method of presenting the material to the class, the professor accused the students of launching a witch hunt that would have a chilling effect upon freedom of expression.

The two authors also disagree in their views of fundamentalism. Taylor goes into detail about the Christian-Fundamentalist uprising and about how the non believers started their own fundamentalism against them. This eclectic group included multiculturalism, feminists, radical homosexuals, Marxists, and New Historists. This new fundamentalism attacks nonbelievers as agents of Satan, so the politically correct dismiss their critics as victims of, to use the famous Marxist phrase, false consciousness... Taylor exaggerates about the campus radicals too much making the audience truly believe that all students are extremely politically correct and will tear down anybody who isnt.

Ehrenreich, from experience on campus, doesnt agree with these allegations at all. She disagrees with President Bush when he talked about radical extremists on campus. It would be interesting to know how he calculated this rise in radicalism. Two thirds of Harvard students wholeheartedly supported the Gulf War, according to one Crimson poll. And during my years at Harvard I found that most women on campus, including those who consider themselves politically liberal, would not willingly identify themselves as feminists. She also goes on to talk about the different clubs offered at Harvard and how the posters put up by the Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Students Association are routinely torn down.

On the other hand, the Republican Club posters are never removed. Concluding with The campuses are no more under siege by radicals than is the society at large she explains that students wouldnt dare criticize a professor for fear of their grade and fear of being pilloried in the national press. In addition, the use of style in both of the essays is very different. Taylor uses pathos and ethos to appeal to his audience. He states his concern without any hard evidence to back it up. Also, Taylor uses rhetoric and writes a long essay in order for the audience to agree with him without questioning his knowledge.

Ehrenreich, however, used logos to prove her point. She described real life events that she herself was involved personally in. She also presented opinion poll which is factual data. Ehrenreich was specific and didnt try to trick the audience by using rhetoric.

Both the essays, Are You Politically Correct? and What Campus Radicals? The PC Undergrad is a Useful Specter, are amazing papers written by two very educated people with different views. John Taylor is on the conservative side and believes that we do have to fear radicals because of their fundamentalist beliefs that could lead to something else.

Rosa Ehrenreich, however, is not so conservative and knows a little bit more about the Harvard campus since she attended it. Her account of the story shows that Taylor, getting his information from the Crimson, was not completely informed of the real facts on the professor. Nor did he have any other stable facts in his essay that could be backed up by sufficient data. Finally, even though the papers did have similarities, I believe they are very different both by the style, views and opinions.
