John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States. He was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts to John and Abigail Adams on July 11, 1767. He was their first child. His father, John Adams, was the second President of the United States. In 1778 and 1780, when he was only 11 and 13 years old, John Quincy accompanied his father on diplomatic missions to Europe. He studied in Paris in 1778 and 1779.
In 1780 he studied at the University of Leiden. When John was 14 years old he became Francis Dana s (chief justice of the State of Massachusetts) secretary. Then in 1782 he reunited with his dad where he acted as additional secretary to the people that were negotiating the treaty of peace which concluded the War of American Independence. After that he went back to Massachusetts and went to Harvard.
Adams graduated from Harvard in 1787 and became a lawyer. In May of 1794 John Adams became minister to the Netherlands. He was appointed this position by George Washington, who had read his articles that were published in Boston newspapers. Then in 1796 George Washington appointed him minister of Portugal, but before his departure his father became President of the United States and he declined this offer. In 1791 until 1801 he was minister to Prussia. In 1799 he negotiated the Treaty of Amity and commerce with Prussia.
He was called back by his father in 1801. The next year which was 1802 he was elected to the Massachusetts senate as a Federalist. In 1803 he was sent to Washington D. C.
as a member of the U. S. Senate. He was then appointed as minister to Russia by President James Madison. He held this position from 1809 to 1814. President James Monroe then called Adam s from England to become Secretary of State in 1817.
He held this office until 1825. During his years of office, he helped perfect the foundations of American foreign policy. His greatest achievement during his office however was the Transcontinental Treaty with Spain, which was signed on February 22, 1819 (ratified on February 22, 1821). By this treaty Spain acknowledged that East and West Florida were to be a part of the United States.
Many people consider him to be the greatest secretary of state in American history. He was elected president in 1824. He was in office from March 4, 1825 to March 3, 1829. Adams believed that people already had liberty (at least for white people). He also believed that liberty was guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States.
So following his opinion, Adams tried to make freedom better for the people and created strong national policies. A national tariff to protect domestic industries was created by him. Adams also protected American Indian tribes and lands against encroachment by the states. A national program was created that improved highways, canals, railways, etc.
He was a great Secretary of State but not president. There wasn t really any party that backed him up. The loose democracy of his time wanted the least government possible. He was opposed by the South because he opposed slavery and he was capable of paving the way to the abolition of slavery. He was ahead of his time so people didn t appreciate his efforts with what he did while being President of the United States of America. Adams had three sons and one daughter.
His son, Charles Francis, was minister to Britain during Abraham Lincoln s presidency and was the only child that survived him. One of Adams sons died in his twenties from what was apparently a suicide. His wife was Louisa Catherine Johnson whom he married on July 26, 1797. Through his life, he made many accomplishments. He served his country from 1830 on, until the day he died inside the House of Representatives on February 23, 1848. He died in a place where he showed his love and affection to his country, the United States of America.
