John Dalton was born on September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfeild, Cumberland County, England. John s father was a weaver and a school teacher. John was taught by his father at a Quaker school in his home town. John began teaching at the Quaker school at the age of 12. In 1781 he moved to Kendal, where he had a school with his older brother and cousin. In 1787 Dalton began a series of meteorological observations.
He continued these for 57 years. Dalton was the first person to prove the validity of the concept that rain is precipitated by a decrease in temperature, not by a change in atmospheric pressure. Dalton also wrote a letter on color blindness, which he read in front of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. His paper was the first ever on color blindness, which became known as Daltonism. John Dalton s most important contribution to science was his theory that matter is composed of atoms of different weights and combine in simple ratios by weight. Dalton created this theory in 1803.
In 1808 Dalton published a book called A New System of Chemical Philosophy. The book listed the atomic weight of known elements relative to the weight of hydrogen although his weights weren t exactly accurate. John came to his theory of atomic weights by studying the physical properties of atmospheric air and other gases. By studying this Dalton discovered the law of partial pressures of mixed gases, also know as Dalton s law.
This law states that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the separate pressures that each of the gases would exert if it alone occupied the whole volume. John Dalton died in Manchester on July 27, 1844
