Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21 st l 685, the son of Johann Ambrosius, court trumpeter for the Duke of Eisenach and director of the musicians of the town of Eisenach in Thuringia. For many years, members of the Bach family throughout Thuringia had held positions such as organists, town instrumentalists, or Cantors, and the family name enjoyed a wide reputation for musical talent. Compared to most other major composers, Johann Sebastian Bach's life and career were confined to a very limited geographical space. Born and raised in Thuringia, he never went farther north than Hamburg and L beck, or farther south than Carlsbad. In a similarly confined way, his east-west range stretched from Dresden (east) to Kassel (west). His complete geographical space can be found on a map derived from Christoph Wolff's great scholarly Bach study (Chr.

Wolff, Bach, Essays on His Life and Music. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass. , 1991). At the age of 17, Bach was chosen the new organist in Sangerhausen but the offer was rescinded when the local duke decided he wanted his own candidate to have the job. However, Bach did get his next job as organist of the Neue Kirche in Arnstadt.

Here he had access to a brand new Wonder organ and was paid twice the salary of his predecessor. Bach liked the job except that he was continually told to do jobs that he was not supposed to be responsible for. In the summer of 1705, he got into a brawl with a student named Geyersbach. Geyersbach had insulted Bach's musical abilities and began to threaten him with a stick. Bach then reportedly called Geyersbach a nanny-goat bassoonist and Geyersbach retorted that Bach was a dirty dog and took a swing at him.

Bach drew his sword, but Geyersbach jumped on him, making sword fighting impossible, and they fought until other students were able to break them apart. J. S. Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach.

Bach's musical career began at age 15 when he became a choirboy at the Michaelskirche, L newburg. In 1703 he was appointed organist at the Neukirche, Arnstadt. Four years later, in 1707, he was appointed organist at the M hlhausen. A year later he became the court organist at Weimer, a position he would hold for nine years.

He then went on to serve Prince Leopold of K then as musical director. There he composed many of his most famous pieces, including the Brandenburg Concertos in 1721. In 1728 he became chief musical director for all of Leipzig, a position he held for most of his life. On July 28, 1750 Bach, then 65 years old, died in Leipzig. Bach's final and longest term of employment was as cantor of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.

He had many duties here, including performing, composing, teaching Latin, and administering church services. While at Leipzig, Bach was required to compose new music for every church service. This duty led to the composition of over 300 cantatas. A cantata was a vocal work that served as the main musical portion of the Lutheran church service.
