1. The mayor of New Orleans is the first character introduced in this novel. He is informed by a telephone call that Jes Grew is flaring up. "Jes Grew was an anti-plague. "Jes Grew enlivened the host. " Jes Grew begins to be explained to the reader. 2. Jes Grew begins to spread through America. It is very contagious. 3. The Wallflower Order is explained.

It is somebody who doesnt dance. Also, the reader learns what the Mutafikah are. Also known as, "art-nappers" 4. " 7. This part takes place in New York, where there is a lot of gang warfare. One Crime Boss ties to hold somebody up, but is shot at. His cohorts have to stay in the car and wait out the shots fired at them. 8.

This part talks about prohibition and the effects it had on people. Sneaking things around behind the governments back. Also, Harding is president. 9. Younger people want to dance cheek to cheek, while their parents are trying to prohibit dancing closer than 9 inches. Two men talk about Harding's wife running the government. A picket line explodes into violence, and both of the men are killed along with many others. 10.

I dont understand this chapter at all, but here goes Many new people are introduced. But one man is being spoken about directly. His name is PaPa La Bas. He has headquarters that are located in the Mumbo Jumbo Kathedral.

He believes that if you "possessed an Atonist mind, you were healthy. " He has an assistant named Earline. Jes Grew, which began in New Orleans, has now reached Chicago. "They call it a plague, when in fact, it is an anti-plague. " It is apparent that a man named Berbelang has left the group, but why? 11. Woodrow Wilson Jefferson is introduced. He decides he is going to leave the farm, and go to the big city. He is going to make something of his life. 12. This part takes place at a party in Harlem.

Berbelang and PaPa La Bas see each other at this party. Abdul turns off the radio. He stands against the wall and watches people dancing, angry at what is happening. PaPa La Bas tells Abdul that people need to shape up and cut out the dancing.

He says they need factories, schools, guns, and dollars. Biff Musclewhite, consultant to the Metropolitan police talks with one of his colleges. They are at a show of sorts, and they dont stop talking during it. Somebody comes in and shoots Biff Musclewhite's friend at dinner. PaPa La Bas is suspected, and taken to court. The judge dismisses the case.

A woman named Charlotte decides to leave La Bas, and tells him so in his office. He approves of it. 13. Earline goes home to find Berbelang in her house. He has been gone for 3 days.

In the middle of the night, he leaves again. 14. Hinckle Von Vampton is introduced. He does strange things when he is alone in his room. His landlady spies on him. 15.

Von Vampton is admitted into a clinic to "cure" himself. 16. Another man visits Von Vampton. He talks of the headlines reading, voodoo Generals Surround Marines at Port-au-Prince. This man doesnt like Von Vampton's ideas about Haiti. He is then fired from his job. 17. Even though he was just fired, Von Vampton is very happy, and attends a lecture that night.

He is taken away at gunpoint after the lecture. 18. The Wallflower Order headquarters is very busy because of Jes Grew's rise. Von Vampton is talking with some men in a room about what young people are up to. Jes Grew is headed towards New York. Hubert Safecracker Gould will help Von Vampton destroy the Knights of Templar trial records. Von Vampton will start a new magazine called The Benign Monster. 19.

Von Vampton gets his assignment and calls Safecracker to talk about it. 20. A female reporter interviews Von Vampton. But escapes, and goes to talk with his editor. 21. Von Vampton and Safecracker get a phone call telling them theyve been banned in Boston. They celebrate. 22.

Woodrow Wilson Jefferson is hired by Von Vampton for the Talking Android job. WWJ understands what he is supposed to do, and Von Vampton starts to enjoy working with him. I think Von Vampton dies in this scene. 23. Berbelang is part of the Mutafikah. They are planning to invade an exhibit in a museum. Berbelang, Yellow Jack, Thor Wintergreen, and Jose Funds are members of the team who will do it.

The Faust Legend somehow is symbolic in this chapter. 24. The reader learns the rules to dancing. Anybody caught doing other wise is in trouble. Its a Federal Crime! 25. Safecracker and Von Vampton meet with Abdul who is angry that his picture was in their magazine. Safecracker kills Abdul. 26.

La Bas finds Abdul dead. He is not at all upset. 27. Buddy Jackson is introduced as a black man whom owns a Cabaret. Safecracker and Von Vampton try to convince Jackson to submit something to their magazine. I guess Von Vampton did not die. 28. Peter and Charlotte decide to put on a play at the Mumbo Jumbo Kathedral.

Outbreaks of Jes Grew close to New York. 30, 000 cases reported. 29. A black man goes to the Mutafikah basement to tell them the ships are ready. Berbelang doesnt know what he is talking about at first. 30. Biff Musclewhite and Charlotte sit together, talking.

The Mutafikah come to the apartment to capture Musclewhite and take him for a ride to the Art Detention Center. Musclewhite is forced to let the Mutafikah inside the museum. Musclewhite watches the men and women raid the museum and take what they want. Musclewhite convinces Thor to untie him, with promises of fighting the Mutafikah, Jes Grew, and Helen. 31. Nathan Brown is introduced as a poet who doesnt necessarily like black people. He tells Von Vampton that he cannot help him because he teaches young children to stay away from people like Hinckle.

The Wallflower order sends VV a telegram with 1 word: Well? 32. There are no names used in this chapter, so I dont know whom they are talking about. A woman gets on a trolley and doesn't get off where she usually does. 33. Berbelang returns to the museum to relieve Thor. When he gets there, he is killed by Musclewhite who has been released. 34. The woman on the bus was Earline.

She goes out to get a drink with the bus driver. They dance very close in the bar. 35. Thor yells at Musclewhite for shooting Berbelang like an animal. Musclewhite tells him that his will be quiet and traditional, implying that he is going to kill him. 36. Earline wakes up with the bus driver in the morning. Musclewhite phones Charlotte to tell her he got away from the Mutafikah. 37.

Charlotte reads in the paper that Musclewhite killed Berbelang. When she asks him about it when he comes over, he strangles her with a cord. 38. A rookie cop comes to the murder scene to see Musclewhite sitting on the couch drinking whiskey. He tells a made up story about how Charlotte died that the cop doesnt believe. Musclewhite makes sure the cop believes him by yelling at him. 39.

Earline faints when she hears the news of Berbelang. "The Loa possesses her with the red dress on. " 40. The bus driver is told to leave. La Bass gives him his card and tells him he will explain if he wants to come talk to him. Just as he leaves, Black Herman and the sisters enter. They are there to help Earline.

Soon they leave. 41. Black Herman tells T-Malice to take care of Earline. She will be back to normal within 24 hours. 42. Herman tells La Bas that Earline is doing better, and that they are to meet with someone, Benoit, at the Harbor.

La Bas and Herman aboard the boat, The Black Plume. They speak of the Atonist Path. Practice Catholicism up front, and voodoo in the background. They say they are 95 % Catholic, 100 % voodoo. They talk about Haiti being raided by the Americans. They also talk about Jes Grew being on the rise. 43.

This whole section is Von Vampton thinking to himself about Jes Grew. Nothing really happens in this section. 44. Safecracker tells Von Vampton where he has been all day. At the schoolyard in Harlem collecting notes from black children to give to a publisher. They get the idea lighten Wwj's face with some cream because his skin is too dark. 45. As WWJ is putting the cream on his face, his father comes in.

He is coming to take his boy back where he belongs. This is supposed to be a very funny part of the book, but I dont get it. 46. After WWJ and his father leave, Safecracker is lying in the mud face down because WWJd dad punched him. Von Vampton helps him up. Another Android comes in.

He starts talking about different types of jazz. 47. Harding is killed in this scene. On accident? On purpose? I dont really know. 48. Earline is going to be ok.

La Bas and T Malice go see a show. 49. Back at the Black Plume, Benoit and Von Vampton meet along with some other men to discuss who the Talking Android will be. They also talk about feeding the new Loa, and Jes Grew. After the stock market crashes, what had really caused it? 51.

At the gathering, Safecracker is introduced as one of the great poets on the rise. He begins to recite his work when La Bas, Herman, and T-Malice rudely interrupt him. They have come to arrest Von Vampton, and Safecracker. Safecracker is white with black paint on his face. 52.

This section is a long story about ancient Egypt. Von Vampton got a job with the New York son. The Wallflower Order ransacked his apartment, seizing the book that they wanted to burn in hopes of sterilizing Jes Grew. The book was buried under the Cotton Club. 53. There is a letter written to La Bas from Abdul. After all this happened, we learn that Jes Grew has no beginning and no end.
