The Industrial revolution was a time of drastic change and transformation from hand tools, and hand made items to machine manufactured and mass produced goods. This change generally helped life, but also hurt it as well. Pollution rose, working conditions declined, and the number of women and children working increased. Many things changed during this time including: the government, the arts, literature, music and architecture and they we look at life. In 1733 John Kay invented the flying shuttle which cut the time it took to weave something in half. This was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
After the flying shuttle came numerous inventions all aimed at speeding up production times in order tour costs and sell more. In the beginning it was limited to only the cotton industry, but active went on it spread into other areas, the first being transportation. The steam engines invented which sped up transportation greatly and also allowed cities to be farther away from rivers. Before the steam engine cities were usually along rivers used for waterpower, but now they could use the steam engine and it was no longer necessary to be onthe rivers. Another thing that was started by the industrial revolution is capitalism. Capitalist, people who have their own materials, money and space, bought many machines and stored them in a factory, where hired people worked the whole day manufacturing goods.
This started the factory system. With the factory system workers worked all day in bad conditions for little pay on an assembly line to produce mass amounts of products. Mass production allowed goods to be sold cheaper which made them available to the lower classes. Life was drastically changed during the industrial revolution. People were living insert infested, crowded and very unhealthful conditions, much like their place of work. Even children and women labored in harsh conditions, working long hours with little pay.
It has also affected us by starting the never ending quest to speed up. With every new invention our life has been sped up to the point where we are saying Be here at 8: 23. and other ridiculous things. The Industrial Revolution was a time of dramatic change, from hand tools and handmade items, to products which were mass produced by machines. Workers became more productive, and since more items were manufactured, prices dropped, making expensive and hard to make items available to the poor and not only the rich and elite.
Life generally improved, but the industrial revolution was also harmful.
