Idun was a very important part of the gods life and survival. "The goddess of Spring, or rejuvenation and the wife of Bragi, the god of poetry. She was the keeper of the magic apples of immortality, which the gods must eat to preserve their youth (Evans & Millard). Without the assistance of Idun's golden apples the Aesir's would have grown old and lived in this condition for eternity. "These apples were of course much desired by other creatures, for instance the giant Thiassi, who once managed to capture Idun along with her apples" (Page). Scared and threatened by Thiassi's demands for Iden's powers, Loki lured her out of the city of Asgard in hopes of receiving his freedom in return.
