The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay There was a child went forth every day, And the first object he look d upon, that object he became, And that object became part of him This quote is from Walt Whitman s poem, in which he suggests that a person s surroundings become a part of that person. Huckleberry Finn is a good example to which Whitman s idea is proved. Huck comes across many people who help shape his values and who influence him greatly. The Widow Douglas, Pap, Jim, and the Grangerfords all contributed to Huck s values and his outlook on life. When Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn found a profound amount of money, the Widow Douglas decided to take the unfortunate, homeless Huck in as her son.

She wanted to civilize him and teach him many things. She gave him nice clothes, taught him about the Bible, and also taught him manners. She loved Huck as her own, and was less harsh on him as Miss Watson was. Huck also liked the Widow a lot more than he did Miss Watson, and he remembered many of the things she taught him. Huck had a pretty close relationship with the Widow too.

Along his journey down the river, Huck often thought of the Widow, and many of his decisions reflected the things she taught him. Therefore, her teachings followed him throughout his journey, and also throughout his life. For example, when Huck was on Jackson s Island by himself, he thought of how prayer really does work because the bread found him, like the Widow prayed it would. Also, when Huck and Jim met up with the cutthroats, Huck wanted to do something nice for them, because he thought that s what the Widow would ve done. Throughout Huck s life, his father was often not around, and when he was, he was usually drunk. He wasn t really a fatherly figure like he should ve been, and was also a bad influence on him.

When Huck went to live with the Widow, his father, Pap, wasn t around. One day, however, Pap showed up in town, and started causing many problems. He took Huck from the Widow, and they lived away from town for a while. Pap helped shape Huck s values because he taught him what not to do. Huck resented whiskey and other alcohols because he saw what affects it had on people. He resented his father and the way that he lived his life.

Many times along his journey down the river, Huck made wise decisions not to do something, because that s how he knew Pap would ve done it. He didn t want to do what his father would ve done. While on Jackson s Island, Huck met up with the Widow s slave, Jim. They became good friends, and helped each other to freedom. Jim had many different outlooks on life, many of which were superstitions. Though Huck could have been in trouble for helping Jim to freedom, he did it anyways, because he knew Jim was a good friend.

Jim and Huck had a very close relationship, and whenever they were parted, times were rough for both of them. They worked well as a team. Many of the philosophies that Jim believed in, Huck started to follow. At first, Huck didn t believe the superstition of the rattlesnake skin. However, as time went on, and as more bad things started happening, he started to believe.

Jim taught Huck to be careful in life, and to value the little things one has. Finally, the Grangerfords influenced Huck s life. When the steamboat hit Huck and Jim s raft, they lost tract of each other, and Huck went to shore in search of him. When he was on shore looking, he came across a family that held him at gunpoint.

This family was the Grangerfords, who took him in after inspecting him. They were very nice to Huck, and gave him anything he wanted. They taught him more manners, and respect. For example, every morning the children treated their parents with much respect, and Huck learned this.

He took what they taught him with him in life, and respected many people more. They were a part of Huck because they made him see a different side of life, and a different way of living. Huckleberry Finn is a good example of Whitman s idea that surroundings can shape a person s life and outlook on life. The people that Huck came across influenced him greatly, and they taught him many lessons in life. The Widow, Pap, Jim, and the Grangerfords all contributed to Huck s life and many of his decisions. They taught him right, wrong, and also what to do when times get tough.

And that became a part of him.
