Throughout the story The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Huck, starts off as a young adventurous boy who as he floats down the river becomes a more mature person. He is able to grow because of the situations that he becomes in placed in. These situations cause him to make decisions in which he is able to learn more about himself which causes him to grow. This adventurous story begins with Huck joining the Tom Sawyer gang were there they are supposed to be pirates. Huck decides to leave the gang because he realizes that it is not what he thought it was when he first joined. Also because he starts to think that the gang is foolish.

As he starts to get older he matures and he realizes that kids games are not really what he wants, so he moves on. His next step in maturity is his escape from his pap. This growth was a result of something that was practical, convenient and self-controlled. He does not like the way his father is treating him so he decides to fake his death and gain freedom and independence by floating down the river. Now that he has started his journey down the river Huck also gains responsibility which is a major cause for growth, in maturity. He now has a responsibility to Jim, his companion, and to himself.

Huck's maturity at first was expanded because of the actions that he took to better his life. Now his maturity will grow with a different type of action or dilemma, meaning moral dilemmas. Were as before his maturity grew because it was practical, convenient and all self controlled. These moral decisions affect his maturity because the focus will change from one of him to one of a care for others.

Just before Huck reaches the town of Cairo he needs to make a decision on weather or not to turn Jim in or not because he knows that the slave trades will be inquiring about why he is traveling with a black man. Here Huck does not know so he looks to himself for an answer. He says Hold on; some you done the right and give Jim up, would you felt better than what you do now? No, says I, Id feel bad, Id feel just the same way I do now, well, then, says I, whats the use you learn to do the right when its troublesome to do right and aint no trouble to do wrong, and the wage is just the same (p. 82). Huck is attached to Jim, he cares form him and why he should he turn his friend in when all that is going to happen that he will go back in slavery. Another reason he gives for not turning Jim in is that there is the same wage weather he does or does not do so.

He figures he will take his chances and help his friend out especially because they share the same dream. The maturity of Huck grows once again because he realizes that slavery is wrong and why should he put his travel companion back into something so cruel and vicious, when all Jim wants is his freedom, which is what Huck is chasing himself. Along his journey Huck and Jim stop at many towns. One town they stop in they meet the Wilk sisters. Huck becomes attracted to one of the sisters and feels it necessary to protect her from being scammed out of the money that her father left behind in his will.

She was being scammed by the King and the Duke who are two characters who travel up and down the Mississippi taking money from people. Huck takes a liking to Miss Mary Jane and feels that he has to tell her about what is going to be done. Here Huck is faced with a Moral Dilemma and his maturity shows through because he cares about her. In the end Huck turns the King and Duke in and Mary Jane does not get taken advantage of. Huck Finn starts out as an adventurous young boy who first starts to mature because it was practical and convenient then the reasons seem to change.

They change because they now involve his own personal feelings toward certain people, places and things. In the end Huck gains his freedom from his past and was able to handle that freedom and responsibilities that came with it because he was able to grow and mature.
