Huck Finn Essay In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, disguises play an important role in developing the plot. There are many characters that wear disguises all the time, as well as those that cannot wear them. Among these characters are Huck Finn, Jim, the King, Mary Jane, and Aunt Sally. There are many characters, in Huck Finn, that disguise themselves to escape trouble or their past. Huck was one of these characters. Huck faked his own death to get away from the troublesome father he had.

This shows his determination to get away from his dad because he did not like being with him at all. Most people would feel bad about faking their death and knowing somebody would be hurt by it, but Huck s determination shows that he wanted to get away at any cost. Huck also disguised himself as many different people including George Jackson and Tom Sawyer in order to hide the fact that he faked his own death. This shows why Huck was constantly changing his character and lying.

To most people, lying and faking who you are is considered as a terrible sin or fault, but Huck does it to escape his old world and enter in a new one. Another character wears a disguise is Jim. Jim s disguise is that he is a captured slave when he really is a runaway. This shows that Jim wanted to escape from his surroundings and be free. He also knew that he would be in deep trouble if he was caught, but he did not want to be sold so he took the chance. These events show that Jim and Huck were disguising themselves in order to escape their lives that they were leading before.

In contrast with those who wear disguises, there are some characters that are too good-natured to deceive others or themselves. One of these characters is Mary Jane. Mary Jane cried when the slaves were separated, and said that her trip was spoiled because of this. This shows that for her to wear a disguise would be impossible because she showed her emotions to Huck in her everyday life. Her emotions are also shown by the way that she cared about a slave leaving even though it was considered wrong to do. Mary Jane also helped defend Huck when her sister was interrogating him, only because she always helps people before they get hurt.

She didn t really know Huck, but she was ready to defend him in a second. She also responded to her own sister in a harsh manner to defend a complete stranger. This shows that she is too kind hearted to lie to somebody and pretend to be somebody else. Aunt Sally was also another character that could not be in a disguise. Aunt Sally takes up for Tom even though he is a stranger in her household. She did the contrary to most people who would not be as so hospitable to their guest even though they may let the stranger in for diner.

She was also so kind as to let Huck stay in her house before she finds out that they are related. Also, when Tom kisses Aunt Sally, she is ready to slap him. Most people might have let it slide as they would be shocked and would have hid their urge to slap Huck, but Aunt Sally was ready to slap him, but when she find out that she is related to Tom, she very rapidly apologizes for her outburst, while others would have still been mad for not telling them earlier. She had nothing to hide, because she was too honest to hide any small fact or behind a disguise. Mary Jane and Aunt Sally were two very honest women who had nothing to hide; for this reason, they never wore disguises to deceive others. In conclusion, there are many characters who wear or don t wear disguises, and the element of being in disguise, be it physical or emotional disguise, has helped to develop the plot in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
