As I, woke up, fuzzy from lack of sleep, I crawled out of the tent to see where we were. It was so dark the night before when we arrived, I wasnt sure. Our campsite was on a hillside terrace, and the campground was empty except for our Barbie sized blue plastic pup tent. I heard Karley moan from inside the tent.

I looked at my watch, 6 oclock, it was time to go. The ferry would be leaving in an hour and I wanted to get there early. I called to her to get up and proceeded to look for a bathroom. I settled for a big tree. When I got back, Karley was packing up the tent. I started getting our stuff together.

We worked in silence, exhausted. The night before we had taken a train to Athens, then a bus to this campsite near the ferry to Patras. The island of Mikonos was our final destination, we figured wed get jobs there for a few months. Wed been working in Germany for the last eight weeks, and decided to do a little travelling before our rail passes expired. Though wed been travelling through Europe for a while now, wed gotten soft in Germany. There we had a place to sleep every night, plenty to eat, and lots of friends.

We were alone and on the road again. Once we were packed, we headed toward the entrance of the campground. Once there, we stood, baffled. The big main entrance gate was locked.

I went to the office and knocked on the door. And knocked, and knocked. No answer. When I came back, Karley and I looked at each other. We both had the same thought. We threw our backpacks over the fence and climbed over.

We laughed as we hiked to the road, nothing could hold us we were invincible. It was only a half mile or so to the town, we walked briskly eager to get off the road and on the ferry. It was a typical June day in Greece, not a cloud in the sky, a nice breeze coming off the water, and luckily, too early to be too hot. This area was pretty wooded and shady, which we appreciated. The day before in Athens had been miserable. Dry, dusty and about a hundred degrees.

And we hadnt showered in days. When we reached the turn to the ferry dock, signs urged us to go straight. I checked the map again. It definitely showed the ferry dock to our right. What should we do?

I asked. Well figure it out. she said, which made me laugh. It was our travelling mantra.

Each of us had said it a thousand times in the last months, when confronted with something we couldnt understand. It was a reassuring statement, and had always been proven right. We decided to follow the signs. We hiked up a hill, looking for more signs. The landscape was beautiful, pine trees everywhere, the houses along the road all whitewashed, their tiles sparkling in the early morning sun.

Palm trees waving in the breeze. This sure beat Switzerland, where wed hiked for hours in the driving rain just days before. While we walked further up the road, we reminisced about different places wed been, people wed met. After about an hour, we reached the top of the hill.

We looked down toward the water and saw the ferry. It was about a mile behind us, just where the map had said it would be. It was pulling away from the dock. I couldnt decide whether to laugh or cry.

I looked at Karley's face and decided to laugh. Well, I guess we got to see some of the countryside. There be another one in a couple of hours. I said, smiling. She didnt smile back. Lets go!

I grunted, and I heaved my pack back on and headed right, towards the water. I figured it would be shorter than the long winding hill we had followed up. Soon it was obvious that Karley was getting tired. Though much taller than I, she was slightly built and had a harder time getting around with her heavy backpack. I had taken all of the excess tent equipment and strapped it to my pack to help her out, but she was fading fast. I set a fast pace, I just wanted to get there and sit down.

The temperature was rising rapidly. We wandered through suburban streets for what seemed like ages. Rather than going downhill, the route I followed went up a steep hill, then down the other side, one after another. Sweat was pouring down my face and into my eyes.

At one point, we reached a really steep hill. I fairly jogged up it, desperate to get to that ferry. I heard Karley call my name and turned around. She was standing at the bottom of the hill, pack on the ground, crying. I cant make it! she cried go get help!

I laughed and yelled, Get your ass up this hill or I will come down there and drag you up by your hair! She laughed, and wiping her tears away, picked up her pack and trudged up the hill. Shortly we reached the outskirts of town. Karley sat down on a bench in front of a store and refused to move any further.

I threw my pack down beside her, annoyed, and went into the store. I came out with a bottle of orange juice. Handing it to her, I told her to sit there and watch the packs while I found the ferry terminal. I hiked down the road toward the water. When I got to the edge I realized I was on a cliff above the ferry dock. It was only about a quarter mile, and thank God, downhill all the way.

I came back and let her know how close we were. We sat and rested for about fifteen minutes, waiting for Karley's blood sugar to balance itself, and then headed on down the road to the ferry. When we reached the ferry dock, we had an hour to wait, so we grabbed some food from a store and had a picnic on the beach. It was so nice to be sitting down, with the salt breeze ruffling our hair. Little children and their mothers were playing in the water, seagulls flying overhead. The sky was dark, brilliant blue, not a cloud to be seen.

We ate cheese, fruit and bread and drank a couple of Amstels. It was the best meal wed had in a long time. Then we stretched out satisfied on our blanket, watching the boats go by. Minutes later the ferry arrived. We watched it slowly head toward the dock as we packed up our gear to head out.

That familiar feeling of excitement came over us, as we were once again heading out alone into the unknown. We smiled at each other and lined up to get on board. Once on the ferry, we found a comfortable place to sit on deck in the sunshine. I got out the map of Patras, looking for a campsite to stay at when we arrived. How long do you want to stay in Patras? I asked Should we look for a job there first, or just head to Mikonos?

I dont know, she answered Well figure it out.
