Celtic Heroic Values: Heroic Values: Celtic People vs. Germanic People Introduction The Celtic and Germanic people both lived in roughly the same period: the eighth century, give or take. These peoples had another thing in common, too: they had a Heroic Age, just as the Greeks had had. In the following pages, you will find an outline of some of the things I consider to be these peoples most heroic values. Heroic Values of the Celtic People The Heroic Age of the Celtic people lasted approximately from the second century BC to the fourth century AD. It was an era of kings; a time of rule by the men in the nation.

I feel that these people had a couple of main values I would tag as heroic. First, it would have to be their stand on prophecy. There was a class of that time known as druids. During this time, not many, if any, people were literate, so those who were, the druids, were very important to their lives.

The druids had much knowledge that they shared, knowledge that no one else had because of the common folks lack of literacy. They shared their knowledge orally with others. This allowed their knowledge to be shared all around, including from generation to generation. The kings during this time were especially fond of these individuals. The druids were often called upon by the kings because of their knowledge.

They [the druids] were considered to have the gift of prophecy. The Celtic people had a mood in their culture set very much towards that of a fatalistic prophecy. This is portrayed in The Story of Deirdre. At the start of the story, Deirdre grieves the loss of Noisiu.

He had been stained. These two, Deirdre and Noisiu, had been involved in a love much like that of Romeo and Juliet. The second value I would pin on the Celtic culture would be their experience with beauty. Deirdre had been compared with the wife of the king Menelaus, Argive, leading her to be sometimes be called the Irish Helen. This is due to Helen of Troy who caused the Trojan War. Another incident was of a woman who caused the burning of Email Michael, King Conchuburs capital.

As you can see, beauty played a big role in the lives of the Celtic people, whether they may have realized it or not. Heroic Values of the Germanic People According to the reading, the Germanic people apparently lead lives that were removed from emotion. They were not allowed to share their feelings or emotions with one another. If they did, they should be prepared to pay the consequences. The Germanic people considered this to be an unacceptable behavior.

To me, this is the main heroic value portrayed in the story The Wanderer. In this piece, the main character in the story is a lonely man in search of another lord. His previous lord has died, and so this man has to find another to replace him. The problem in the fact that he must take this journey on his own.

As I said before, the Germanic People were not ones to allow exchange of feelings, so the wanderer is to do this both physically and emotionally by himself. Not necessarily an easy feat. As a result of the loss of his lord and the suppression of his inner emotions, the individual in the story is left, I think, longing for this kind of interpersonal relationship. Possibly, this is why it is so important for him to find another lord. He possesses a very large desire to share these feelings. The wanderer ends up with a very pessimistic view of the world due to his experience.

A pessimistic view that is applied to everything. Thus, as noted in the introduction to this piece, he left asking himself, Where have all the good friends and good things gone? From this I think you will agree that the Germanic people could be, and probably should be, labeled as stoic. Conclusion As you can see from the values pointed out above, both the Celtic and Germanic People did indeed have a Heroic Age. Even though they portrayed different values, both cultures have histories that very obviously display their heroic values, thus making them an important addition to world literature.
