Gun Control: We do not need any more Ron a friend of the family recently went to Gander Mountain to purchase a shotgun. He went up to the firearms counter and told the salesman what he wanted and the salesman got the paperwork ready. After Ron finished filling out the paper work, the salesman took it over to the computer and started to enter the information. A couple of minutes later the salesman came back and told Ron he could not purchase the gun because the computer said that he had a criminal record. This surprised Ron since he has not even had as much as a traffic ticket in over 10 years.

Ron asked the salesman to enter the information again, and once more it came back that he had a criminal record. Ron ended up going home very angry and without his gun. Do to a glitch in the computer system this law abiding citizen was refused his right to buy a gun. We do not need anymore gun control laws! There are three reasons why we do not need any more laws and they are, criminals can still buy guns on the black market, the Second Amendment, and the laws we have do not work. First of all the government should worry more about limiting the guns that are sold on the black market than the ones that are sold legally.

A criminal knows that he is not going to be able to walk into a gun store and buy a gun, so he is going to find what he wants on the street. The government is not hurting criminals by restricting the sale of guns, it is only hurting people like Ron or myself who use firearms in a safe and orderly manner. What restrictive gun sales have done is fuel the black market, and render firearm availability less accessible to law-abiding citizens, thereby creating more victims (Gallant 28). By limiting the sale of firearms the government is limiting our self-defense making it easier for criminals to commit crimes. The biggest debate on gun control would have to be the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment states, A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

People that are for gun control emphasize on the words well regulated Militia while people that are against more gun control emphasize on the words the right of the people to keep and bear arms. One does not have to belong to a well regulated Militia in order to have the right to keep and bear arms (Original). Owning a gun is a right not a privilege, just like a landowner has the right to say how he wants his property used. There is no evidence of writings that indicate that the sole purpose of the Second Amendment applied only to members of a well regulated Militia, or that the sole purpose of this amendment was to preserve the right of the states to keep their Militias (Original). My first gun was given to me when I was 12 years old. It was a single shot 20 gauge, and it was also my father s first gun.

It has been a tradition in my family for many generations that the son receives a gun on his 12 th birthday. Luckily for us, our tradition of bearing arms has not gone from the country, the tradition is so deep and so dear to us that it is one of the most treasured parts of the Bill of Rights-the right of all Americans to bear arms, with the implication that they will know how to use them (Metaksa 45). There is no reason that we should have more laws if the ones we have do not work. The laws we have are aimed at limiting gun sales when they should be aimed at reducing gun violence. Take the Brady bill for instance, this bill made it mandatory for primary gun dealers to run a criminal background check on anyone purchasing a firearm. They would enter information about the customer into a computer that was linked to the FBI to see if the buyer had a criminal record.

This bill worked except for the loophole that secondary firearm salesman do not have to run this check. With secondary market sales accounting for an estimated 40 percent of yearly gun transfers, (Gallant 24). The difference between primary and secondary firearms salesman is that secondary gun sales are almost completely unregulated. Don t abandon the Brady Law, just make improvements.

In the face of the Brady s documented failure, that s like watching gasoline being used to put out a fire and after it fails to do so suggesting that more gasoline might do the trick (Gallant 24). The government should not try to penalize everyone because some people do not properly use guns, it would be like telling people that they can not buy a car because to many people do not properly use them. We do not need any more gun laws. The government should work on limiting the sale of illegally sold guns before limiting the sale of legally sold guns. The Second Amendment was written for a reason, and that reason was to ensure the people the right to own a firearm.

The laws we have now do not work, and the government should try to revise them before making new ones. If we would quit arguing and put our heads together I am sure that we could put together some sort of gun control we can all live with.
