Gun control is an issue that plagues out nation. It is a test of the very liberalism our great nation was founded on. Throughout time, many people have fought to have tougher gun laws, while groups like the NRA fight to have more lenient laws. This essay will discuss arguments for both those in favor of gun control and those who oppose. It will then discuss the current laws in effect now to control gun issues. Finally, the author will share his opinion on the subject.

Proponents of stricter gun control laws argue that reducing the number of crimes committed with guns would save lives. Each year in the United States, more than 35, 000 people are killed by guns, a death rate much higher than in any other industrial nation. Attacks involving a gun are five times more likely to result in a death than similar attacks made with a knife. In 1992, guns were the weapon used in approximately two-thirds of the murders in the United States.

One could also argue that homeowner s guns are often used unintentionally for reasons other than self-defense. Guns kept in homes are 22 times more likely to be involved in unintentional shootings, criminal assaults, homicides and suicide attempts than to be involved in injuring or killing in self defense. And since thirty-nine percent of households in the U. S. have at least one gun and twenty-four percent contain a handgun, that adds up to many accidental shootings.

In 1996, suicide was the ninth leading cause of death in the United States. Firearms were the number one cause of completed suicide attempts. Opponents of gun control laws, including organizations such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), object to the inconvenience these laws may cause to law-abiding gun buyers or owners. Another objection to gun control laws concerns the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which reads: A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Those who oppose restrictions on gun ownership find support in the language of the Second Amendment and believe that it should be interpreted to guarantee citizens free access to firearms. However, the courts have never struck down a gun control law because of this provision, in part because they have interpreted the Second Amendment as applying only to militia weapons; nonetheless, the Second Amendment has been an important part of the debate on gun control.

In defense to gun-owners, the NRA has a cartoon mascot named Eddie Eagle who teaches kids that playing with firearms is bad. They also have safety training courses for adults being offered everywhere. The federal government and all U. S.

states have multiple gun control laws. These laws are based on several strategies: forbidding people who are considered to be unreliable from obtaining any firearms; prohibiting anyone other than the police, the military, and persons with special needs from acquiring high-risk guns that is, those that are particularly likely to be misused; and requiring waiting periods before purchasing a gun or gun license. The most common strategy attempts to prohibit unreliable people from obtaining guns. Federal and state laws prohibit people with criminal records or other individuals deemed to be poor risks from acquiring guns. Both federal and many state laws also prohibit minors from purchasing guns. The second gun control strategy centers around high-risk guns.

Since 1934, federal law has severely restricted machine guns (weapons that fire many rounds of ammunition with a single pull of a trigger) and sawed-off shotguns. The Congress of the United States judged these to be high-risk weapons. Since the late 1980 s, many people have proposed adding some semiautomatic rifles and pistols to the list of restricted high-risk weapons. These guns require a separate pull of the trigger to fire each round of ammunition but can quickly fire many rounds. Restrictions on the sale of some semiautomatic guns, which are called assault weapons in the legislation, became federal law in 1994. In Nevada, there is no licensing or registration of firearms and owners.

Every citizen has the right to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes. It is unlawful to carry concealed upon the person a handgun or other firearm without a permit to carry; with exceptions to police officers, members of the armed forces, sheriffs, constables, marshals, peace officers, or anyone assisting a peace officer. While there are many people in opposition of stricter gun-control legislation and there are many who favor it, I am one of the few who are undecided. I do not know anyone who owns a gun or actively goes hunting. I feel that while guns kill people and are only made for killing with no other real purpose, I also feel that it is someone s right to protect himself or herself with a small gun. I know if someone were to try to break into my house and I didn t own a gun I would probably buy a gun the next day.

I also feel some people just aren t smart about owning a gun. For instance, having a gun somewhere a child could access it at. Also, I do not like guns because some kids who can t control their emotions go on shooting rampages. While I don t believe this influenced by movies, TV, or music, I think they must get the idea that guns are a solution to problems from someone, possibly their parents. I think that if schools had more active gun control education, there might be fewer problems. In closing, guns are an ever-growing problem in society today.

There needs to be something done about it quickly or the amount of deaths by gunfire will continue to escalade until we are extinct. The United States needs to follow the ways of Canada and Europe to find more answers to keep homicide rates down.
