Great Expectations Charles Dickens, the author of Great Expectations, uses light and dark imagery to create atmosphere. In the novel it talks about a boy named Pip, and tells about his trials in life. He deals with fear, hate, love, evil, good, and many other things in this book. These emotions can be expressed in light and dark imagery to make you feel the atmosphere around the character. Light and dark imagery can be expressed in loneliness, despair, and the feelings Pip has regarding certain situations he encounters in life. Pip as a young boy expresses his feelings about the marshes and what he thinks of them, I knew that the dark flat wilderness beyond was the marshes. [ 556, right].

This quotation shows the marshes as a dismal place symbolizing the sadness in Pips life, since he is quite poor, instead of rich like Miss Havisham. It also can mean that his life is empty like the flat wilderness. Pip also thinks of the hulks, or prison ships, as a place of despair, By the light of the torches we saw the black hulk, [ 520, left]. This shows that Pip thinks of the hulks as places of unhappiness, and loneliness because prisoners are held there apart from their families and friends. Also, the evil of the jail symbolizes why the hulks are black.

Miss Havisham's house is described using light and dark imagery to express the loneliness in Pips life, and also the emptiness in her heart, I had heard of Miss Havisham uptown everyone from miles around heard of her as an immensely rich lady who lived in a large dismal house barred shut against robbers, and who lived a life of seclusion. [ 574, left]. This portrait of Miss Havisham shows that her life remains empty due to the fact that her fiancee left her on the podium as she was to get married. Fear versus comfort, and hope versus despair are also expressed using light and dark imagery. The prisoners are considered evil, so when the convict talked to Pip, Dickens expressed his evil nature in this quotation, After darkly looking at his legs and at me several times, he came close, took me by the arm and tilted me back as far as he could hold me. [ 558, left]. This illustrates the evil side of the convict as he uses Pips helplessness to his advantage to get what he wanted. It also gives insight to the fear Pip holds toward the convict.

This quotation indicates that Pip does not want the convict to be caught, although the others want him caught, The soldiers with the baskets soon lit five of the four torches. [ 569, left]. The torches in this instance symbolize the hopes of the other people that the convicts will be caught, while the unlighted torch represents Pips desire to see the convicts remain free Light and dark imagery can be contrasted in good versus evil. Before the convicts were caught, the towns people lit their way by lighting their homes. We were joined by no stragglers from the village, for the weather was cold and threatening the way dreary, the footing bad, darkness coming, and people had good fires indoors, and were keeping the day. [ 567.

right]. This makes darkness the representation of the evil of the convicts, while the lit homes illustrate the goodness of the ones that were keeping virtue alive. Additionally, evil nature is expressed at Miss Havisham's house to make Pip feel uneasy. To stand in a mysterious passage of an unknown house, howling Estella to a scornful young lady neighbor visible or responsible, and feeling it a dreadful liberty so to restore out her name, bush answered at last light came along the passage like star. [ 578, left. ]This gives us an idea of the evil side of Miss Havisham, with her dark house, and Estella as one of her minions, making others unhappy, while making herself feel better about her former love. The stars symbolism could indicate there is a little good in Estella, or that her destiny has something to do with Pips.

Light and dark imagery gives mood to scenes and characters. Pip goes through life wishing for a good one, hoping for the best, with the light symbolizing all of the dreams; however, the darkness represents everything holding him back. The symbolism of light and dark imagery, while any one form of the literary type, is excellent for a work such as Great Expectations, showing much about the inner feelings of Pip, and Miss Havisham.
