Ma Joad realized on here trip that if you didnt look nice or didnt have any money you could not get help from the rich people. For example when the boys went to a nice neighbor hood to get some work to ear money, the rich ladies wanted them gone because of the way they looked. It is like that today, but I cant speak for all rich people. People get put in life where they are supposed to be weather they like it or not. That is why we have class system.
Higher, middle, and lower. Many of the higher-class people only associate with the higher class. Then middle with the middle. If you are now well dressed or look poor and you ask for help from a rich person dont expect to get any.
Many rich people think that if they associate with the lower class it will make them look bad if a rich person went to a poor person for help they would most likely receive it. The reason for that is they dont care who they help or what they did. In The Grapes of Wrath you see a lot of discrimination against the okie's. Especially when they were coming in numbers.
Nobody liked them just because of the way that they looked. The upper class wants nothing to do with the okie's. Then again some people were glad to help. For example when the Joad family needed a loaf of bread and the restaurant manager sold then one for ten cents and the bread was actually fifteen cents.
That was a way the rich helped the poor. That wasnt the only way the rich helped. Although there were not as many incidents as you would like to see. Overall I think the rich treated the okie's very poorly. Because they werent use to seeing so many of them.
