The life stories of many today s New Yorkers are amazingly similar and different at the same time. For those of us who can call New York our new home, the choice to move to this city has certainly been one of the most important decisions of our lives. Whether or not we came from fifty or five thousand miles away, the hopes for success and brighter future were the sources of our motivation. Seven years ago my own future could not look any more vague to me.
Graduating from my high school in Odessa, Ukraine was on the top line of my priority list. After that, just like a stranger in a fairy tale, I was facing the divided paths of the unknown: applying to Odessa colleges, serving in a military, or leaving my past life behind and immigrating to a country, so far yet so tempting, the United States of America. Ironically, since my parents were divided on the subject of the immigration (my mom was all for it and my dad was leaning towards staying), my voice had become the decisive factor. Initially, I was excited about studying either foreign languages or foreign relations in one of Odessa universities.
However, whenever I was trying to look at a long-term picture, I saw the struggles of educated people to make living in a rapidly deteriorating Ukrainian economy. I felt that America represented a rare opportunity to live in a society where the quality of my life would actually depend on my hard work and determination. We have made a decision to come to the USA, and in September, 1994, our family moved to Brooklyn. With the time, I have understood that I will never regret about making that decision.
Another important step involved choosing educational and career path. I did not really have a large list of colleges to apply to. Having no financial base for a private university, and no American High School Diploma to be eligible for most scholarships, my choices were limited to the colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Business and Investments fields have been very interesting for me ever since I had been involved in the Business Analyst career orientation program during my last two years of high school.
After comparing different program offerings in the CUNY colleges, I chose Baruch College over Brooklyn and Hunter, and started working on my Bachelor s degree in Finance and Investments eleven months after coming to this country After successful completion of my undergraduate education, I was offered a position with the Investment Management Division of Goldman Sachs, where I have spent last two years, working as an analyst in the Investment Performance Group. I have had a wonderful learning experience, being able to work together with some of the best Asset Management professionals on the Wall Street. I believe that I am ready for the next step in my career, and the Stern MBA Part-Time Program is the best way to attain a broad spectrum of knowledge and experience, necessary for the success in the business world. I believe that the MBA Program in Stern will provide me with much needed advanced business education which will add value and balance my more specific knowledge and experiences at Goldman Sachs. Applying to Stern, and to Langone Program in particular, is a very important commitment.
I am expecting a very hectic and challenging rhythm of life for the next three or four years. At the same time, I firmly believe that the quality of education in Stern, a variety of course offerings and projects will provide enormous help in advancing my career to a higher ground. There is a large pool of smart, motivated and dedicated people in the business industry, and the Stern experience will provide me with a distinct advantage in my pursuit of self-fulfillment in my career. I also hope that my background, my life, academic and work experiences will prove valuable to other students and the members of the faculty, as we all will strive together to achieve our common goals in the rich and diverse environment of the New York University.
