The California Gold Rush was one of the most important events in the 19 th century. Without it America would not be as populated and economically strong as it is today. The California Gold Rush brought many foreigners into the United States and triggered migration to the Western Coast. The California Gold Rush taught people that failure was okay and made people take risks.

The California Gold Rush was the Las Vegas of the 19 th century. The California Gold Rush blew the United States economy sky high and gave America a very useful and attractive resource. The California Gold Rush started at John Sutter s Mill in the beginning of 1848. The first gold, discovered in January, 1848. Now if Mrs. Wimmer California Gold Rush possesses a piece which has been found earlier than mine Mr.

Marshall can tell, as it was probably received from him. I think Mr. Marshall could have hardly known himself, which was exactly the first little piece, among the whole. As soon as the first piece was discovered the word spread and many within the area joined. Within time many people came from many different places within and outside the United States. People came to California to escape poverty, become rich, to cover their debts, and to try to go into early retirement.

Many Argonauts were left by their spouses for going to California and were criticized by many for not helping their family. From 1848 to 1852 California s population grew from 14, 000 to 223, 856. The spread of Gold Fever was extremely rapid due to the fact that the United States had just won the Mexican War. The press (media) also had a big part in the California Gold Rush because it made people believe that every single gold digger that came to California would become a millionaire in no time and with very little effort. The news spread outside of the United States and soon immigrants started coming from countries such as China, Chili, Mexico, Ireland, Germany, France, and Turkey. The foreigners, like the already natives had no intentions of staying in California longer than a few months.

Many tried to return to their native countries but could not due to the fact that it was very expensive and a very stressful trip back. If you were a foreigner from another country or a person living in (now) Louisiana you had two choices of travel to get to Gold Rush California, the land and sea routes. They each had advantages and disadvantages but the sea route was used more often. The land route was only usable by the people living in the United States because there is no way to walk over water. The land route was not used a lot because of the risks of bandits and diseases such as Cholera and Scurvy. Of all the deaths during the California Gold Rush, Cholera killed at least 80 %.

The water method was used much more often because of two main reasons, it was faster and there was no risk of Cholera or Scurvy. Many people took the sea route because they wanted to save their energy for living in California during the Gold Rush. During the Gold Rush almost every single miner had the same schedule. A miner would work six days a week and did errands on Sunday. On Sunday they usually washed clothes, fixed cabin (or tent), read, or wrote letters and kept a diary. A miner would work 12 hours a day normally and did not work at all on holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Independence Day.

Those were times that reminded the miners of their families, and kept reminding the miners of what is most important and where you came from. The miners set up the Ten Mining Commandments for themselves to maintain the rules and keep everyone on track and. The first mining commandment was thou shalt have no other claim than one. The second mining commandment was thou shalt not have any false claim. The third and probably the most important mining commandment thou shalt not take thy money, nor gold, nor by good name. The fourth and most spiritual mining commandment was that if you do not do your errands on Sunday and you work that your body will wear away in six months and everyone will blame you.

The fifth mining commandment was do not be greedy. Thou shalt not be angry was the sixth mining commandment. The seventh out of ten mining commandments was do not get down on yourself for failure. The eighth mining commandment was THOU SHALT NOT STEAL! The ninth mining commandment was thou shalt not tell false stories. The tenth and final mining commandment was to stay loyal to your spouse (wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend).

The American miners were not the only ones that lived by these rules in Gold Rush California; foreign miners also followed the same routine. The Chinese that came to Gold Rush California outsmarted the United States. They mined the gold and did it just as well as the other miners but they were smarter. They melted the gold into pots and pans and made them look like ash, then they sent them back to China where they melted them back into gold and sold it there.

During the Gold Rush slavery was still legal and many brought their slaves with them to Gold Rush California. They had the slaves work for them while they just sat and rested or worked with the slave and got twice as much work done. The other miners did not like this; they did not feel that it was fair that someone was mining for other people while getting no profit themselves. Many miners helped the slaves escape to freedom and that was part of the reason why California joined the Union later. After looking over all the facts about the California Gold Rush it is easy to see that it was a decisive event that drastically quickened the United States evolvement into a great nation. It gave America a very rich and marketable resource.

If you would like to compare the effect of the Gold Rush to the effect of oil in countries like Kuwait you can see the effect. Without all that oil Kuwait would be a poor country in the middle of Asia instead of being one of richest countries in the world. The California Gold Rush made America s economy rise as high as it has ever been and set off one of the greatest migrations in United States history.
