Mind control is more common than many people realize. A prime example is television. Most people will not admit that commercials and television shows influence them, but of course they do. If it were not influential, companies would not be paying high prices to advertise their products. People buy cars, peanut butter, and soda because of the advertising they see in newspaper adds, magazines, and billboards. It is all propaganda.

It is manipulating people into doing or buying something. Many people do not realize that someone else chooses the information they receive. Someone else controls how much information is received about this political scandal and that new cleaning product. The novel 1984 by George Orwell, deals with government corruption and mind control. In this novel, it is the Party that decides what the population of Oceania sees and believes. By reading this novel, people are more likely to question their government or higher power.

Readers will start thinking about the fact that just because they see or hear something on the news, it does not necessarily mean that it is entirely true. This book is about a society that is divided into three different classes of people: the Inner Party Members, the Outer Party Members, and the Probes. The Inner Party members control the information the other classes receive; they live in luxury while the rest of the population lives a miserable life. The Outer Party Members do have the luxury of being educated; however, Big Brother always watches their every move. It is actually the Probes and Animals who are the closest to being free, simply because they are considered dumb and ignorant. This society is built on the idea that a constant war will create a lower living standard, therefore leaving more food, money, and comforts for the Inner Party Members to hoard.

In this respect, 1984 compares closely to Animal Farm. Just as in the story, Animal Farm, where Napoleon convinced the animals that their memories were false, the Inner Party in 1984 would manipulate people into forgetting their past. The Inner Party was constantly changing documents and changing history to their need as of the moment. One day they are at war with one country, and another day they are at war with the other country; that is the way it had always been. This may leave readers to wonder how much of the history they have been taught is truly what happened.

The United States government has most definitely left out information in high school textbooks which they believe people do not need to learn. This does not mean that the United States government is as an extreme example as the Inner Party of Oceania. It simply means that people should keep an open mind and not always accept everything taught to them. In this novel, Orwell is warning readers in many ways about the future; it is a future as he saw possible in 1948 when Hitler and Stalin ruled totalitarian governments.

Winston Smith is the main character in 1984. He is a man who doubts the ethics of the overpowering, tyrannical government that rules Oceania. Oceania is one of three super states in the world of 1984. Big Brother, the given to the government in the book, even developed its own language called, Newspeak. This government is at constant war with the other two super states, and watches its citizens at all times.

Posters mark every corner and every wall in Oceania. The posters depicted the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy mustache and ruggedly handsome features. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran. Ironically the figure on the poster looks like a cross between Stalin and Hitler.

Winston worked for the Ministry of Truth, also known as Mini true, in Newspeak. The Ministry of Truth concerned itself with news, entertainment, education and the fine arts. It was one of the four divisions in which the government was divided. The other three divisions were: the Ministry of Peace, which concerned itself with war; the Ministry of Love, which maintained law and order; and the Ministry of Plenty, which was responsible for economic affairs. Their names, in Newspeak: Minimal, Minimum, and Miniplenty. The three slogans of the Party were displayed on the front of the Ministry of Truth building: WAR IS PEACE.

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. Winston's job was to rewrite history as so it had always included Big Brother; however, he never saw the old books; Winston simply wrote what they told him. He began figuring out that Big Brother was not exactly as everyone else saw it to be.

In this totalitarian government society, thinking for yourself had become punishable by death and Winston was betraying Big Brother by thinking negatively toward the system. Winston greatly feared the Thought Police who monitor a persons every thought. As Winston's rebellion progressed, he began to wonder if life had always been this way; or if life had once consisted of a government which allowed people to think for themselves and be individuals. He could not remember very well what life was like before Big Brother came into existence. Winston could only recollect bits and pieces of his childhood, but nothing to establish any solid evidence of there ever being another type of government other that Big Brother. Oceania, East asia, and Eurasia are the three battling super states.

Each has an identical government, one that is at a never-ending war with each other to gain complete power over the people that live there. Orwell created this by using methods developed by past dictators such as Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler. Big Brother manipulates its citizens into making them think the way that the government wants them to think. However, instead of only using brainwashing techniques, Big Brother also uses Newspeak and tele screens. Newspeak is the official language of Oceania. It was created with the intention of abolishing all unorthodox thought.

For example, the word bad is replaced by the word untold. The intentions are to have Newspeak completely replace Old speak (modern English) by the year 2050. This vocabulary would decrease in word size instead of constantly increasing. It places limitations on meanings and word usages. In this way the government uses the manipulation of language to control how much information people receive. The tele screens watch the people who are allowed to be educated, at all times, watching for any action, word, or possible thought that could be unorthodox.

These two Orwell inventions were foretelling that we see the equivalent of Newspeak every day in present day society when we are politically correct. Telescreens are present in nearly every commercial institution, and in homes. Orwell may have been trying to warn America and all other countries about the control of overpowering governments. When a co-worker named Julia secretly approached Winston, he learned that he was not alone in his belief that Big Brother was untold. Winston and Julia became lovers and eventually began to share their feelings of rebelliousness to OBrien, another fellow coworker who Winston believed to be a member of a rebel group known as the Brotherhood. About two weeks later the shocking and disturbing turning point of the story is unveiled.

This is the point where Orwell introduces the whole philosophy behind his book. Orwell also brings terror into the story when he writes about what is really behind Big Brother; Oceania's government sends a representative into the plot. A government, very similar to many of the governments in our present society, is at the head of Oceania, and that is where the unmistakable reality of 1984 becomes obvious. The sole manipulative technique used by Big Brother is one that is virtually unrecognizable mental deception. Family and love seem to hold no meaning in this society, for anyone can commit deception. Metaphysics, or the belief that there is existence beyond our comprehension, is represented by Big Brother when the reader learns about doublethink, the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in ones mind simultaneously and fully accepting both of them.

Doublethink and metaphysics are the engines behind the three world governments, and is defined by OBrien. Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else, says OBrien... In the mind of the Party, which is collective and immortal. Whatever the Party holds to be truth is truth. Orwell ends the book with Big Brother arresting Winston. They beat him senseless and continually torture him.

This is not done merely to make him confess that he committed a crime or even to make him say that he thinks that Big Brother is right. They have a way of torturing people to actually break the person down to where he can no longer tell what is true and what is not. When this is accomplished, what they have is a shell of a man, unable to think for himself, they then reprogram his mind. One example of this in the book is when OBrien, who is actually one of the leaders of Big Brother instead of the brotherhood, uses a torturing device in order to make Winston believe that 2 + 2 = 5. Winston knew what OBrien was trying to do and tried to resist. However, there came a point after many countless hours, possibly even a day or two of torture, that when OBrien held up four fingers, Winston actually saw five.

At the very end of the book, they let Winston go, however, not before they were successful with reprogramming his mind. OBrien is convinced Winston is reprogrammed after he takes him into Room 101, which is the most dreaded room of all in the Ministry of Love. In this room, prisoners meet their greatest fear. Rats are Winston's greatest fear; OBrien places a wire mesh mask over Winston's face and threatens to open the door and let rats run across his face. When Winston yells, Do it to Julia! OBrien lets him go.

The very last line in the book is Winston saying, I love Big Brother. The people in the book, 1984 idolized Big Brother, a figure which may not have even existed and will probably never die. The main character of the novel, Winston, is smart enough to realize that the society in which he lives is corrupt. In the beginning of the novel, he hates everything for which Big Brother stands. In the end, He loved big brother. This example shows how much power the government has over the minds of the people in this story.

They have taken the fun and creativity out of everything imaginable. Then there is the modern world, which idolizes the fast lives of movie stars and super models. Does this mean that everything is just a joke, something to believe in for the benefit of others? Of course not, but it does mean that any intelligent person could understand that many things that the American culture idolizes is just very silly. Orwell shows how such a system can impose its will on the people through manipulation of media, constant supervision as aided by technology, and the threat of pain, both physical and mental. Orwell also shows how the state has more subtle methods for imposing its authority.

One example is the manipulation of language and propaganda. Another point Orwell was trying to make was that a society who is striving to reach ultimate utopia may in the end reach ultimate dystopia. This novel is an extreme example of government corruption and mind control. It does make the reader think that maybe humans are more gullible than they realize. This is enough to make a person paranoid. Anyone who comes from a society full of mind control such as the media, cults, gangs, fashion, and even Big Brother is liable to think twice about the reality in which they live after reading 1984.

Hopefully, George Orwell's novel about the normality of mind control has influenced readers and will continue influencing readers into thinking for themselves.
