Crime and Punishment Part 2: a Synopsis This classic narrated drama is among the best novels ever written. From the very beginning, Dostoyevsky captivates the reader s attention and draws it to the main character, Radio Romanovich Raskolnikov. In a dreary and poverty-stricken part of St. Petersburg, a poor and recently former-student lives in a shoddy closet of a room. Raskolnikov eats every other day, and pawns his belongings to an old lady for money to buy food.
In a bizarre, disturbed, state of mind he struggles with his conscience over his obsessive planning of that. The reader learns that he intends to murder Along, the pawnbroker. Despite the fact that he is disgusted by the thought of the crime, he continues the careful, yet incomplete, planning. Many factors affect his decision, however, he finally decides to murder the pawnbroker.
Raskolnikov commits the brutal murder with an ax, and due to an unexpected series of events, is forced to kill the old lady s stepsister and flee the apartment that they occupy. The novel continues with a brilliant portrait of his sin, remorse, and redemption through sacrifice Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky Part 3: The Author Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow in 1821, as the second son of a physician s seven children. His mother died when he was sixteen and his father was murdered a little over two years later. Fyodor was educated in a private boarding school and later served in the army for about five years. He resigned his commission in 1844 with an officer s rank to devote himself to writing.
Dostoyevsky s first novel, Poor Folk was well received, and although less successful, his next novels, The Double and White Nights, all published within two years of each other, nevertheless showed the profound insight into character that makes his personal style of literature so absorbing Arrested in 1849 for having membership in a secret political group, he was exiled to Siberia, and there served four years at hard labor and five as a soldier. His harsh experiences (recorded in The House of the Dead) transformed his youthful liberalism into a fervent religious orthodoxy. Upon his return to St. Petersburg in 1859, he wrote the philosophical Notes from the Underground. This marked his most fruitful literary period. It coincided with the death of his first wife and increasing financial burdens.
The Idiot, the story of a failed Christ figure, followed Crime and Punishment in 1866. All these themes were central to his masterpiece, The Brothers Karamazov, written in 1880, in which with rare psychological and philosophical insight Dostoyevsky plumbed the depths and complexities of the human soul. His last work, it ranks as one of the finest novels ever written and is a synthesis of the authors mature vision. Suffering from epilepsy for most of his life, Fyodor Dostoyevsky died in 1881 after an epileptic attack.
Epilogue Part 5: Personal Comment I believe that this is the single best piece of literature I have ever read. Crime and Punishment takes a deep, serious look at the moral sin of crime itself, as well as the various forms of punishment, many of which are imposed on the criminal by their own conscience. I, myself not exactly having been an angel for the last fifteen years or so only wish that I had read this novel earlier. I truly recommend any of Fyodor Dostoyevsky s works to anybody who is willing to invest the time in reading them. I feel that almost anyone can benefit from reading some of his works.
