Hyde the protagonists find themselves isolated; at times from friends and at other times, society. Dr. Henry Jekyll, scientist of the mystical would seclude himself in his cabinet where he could madly experiment with the dual nature of mankind. The monster, hideous and despicable lived in a non-accepting world where he must accept living a life of solitude. Dr. Henry Jekyll isolates himself from his friends and from society so that he may pursue his scientific beliefs, whereas the monster in Frankenstein must face a life of isolation; not by his choice but by society's cruel and discriminatory nature.

Dr. Henry Jekyll has the choice whether or not to pursue his scientific experiments. This would decide whether or not he would par-take in social events and social gatherings. He would then resume a friendship with Dr. Lanyon and Mr. Utterson.

The monster on the other hand has no choice in the matter of his acceptance in society. No matter what he does his disfigurements will always differentiate him from society. He would never be accepted into society, although his only wish was to have friends he would never fully fulfill this wish. Dr. Jekyll on the other hand was taken over by the evil side of man and could not take part in the social aspect of life.

If he was able to control these evil >urges = he could have been sociable like his friends but the evil manifestations of Mr. Hyde would terminate any thought of this. His experiments ruled his life and he chose not to be sociable. He never controlled the evil temptations thus isolating him in a wicked world. The monster didn = t have the choice whether or not to be excepted into society, he lived in a world of solitude and would be isolated from the world due to his disfigurements.

Dr. Jekyll could have overcame the evil and ruled over his life but instead his isolation was due to the fact that he chose to isolate himself and would experiment with the mystical. In the novels Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the protagonists find themselves isolated, from both society and friends.

They are both either isolated by choice or simply by the choice of society. Dr. Jekyll choses a life of solitude to pursue a scientific life where as, the monster had no choice in the matter. His disfigured body was bound for loneliness and although he wanted his fate differently, he was destined to isolation. Society forces the monster into a life that he must face alone and in the case of Dr.

Henry Jekyll, evil forces him into a life of isolation.
