The first thing I want to point out in this essay is that I've been in school for about eleven years and I'm finally being taught how to learn. These methods have been around for a while and still the school system is so set in it's ways that it is barely beginning to change. But anyway we " ve been taught about left and right brain dominance. We have learnt that there are three main ways that people learn. There are Kinaesthetic, Auditory and Visual learners. It is important to know which one you are.
One of the most important things when you " re learning is to be relaxed. It is similar to when you cannot find your keys. The worst thing to do is to get all worked up and try harder. What you should do is sit down, take deeper breaths and relax. This is to get your mind into the alpha state, this is the state when you have the most control over your memory. So it is very useful to be in this state when you are trying to learn new things, because it helps you remember.
Another important thing is to be positive, say "I understand this " or "I find this easy" don't just think you can do it, know you can do it. I know that when I am listening to a teacher talk for ages or taking down notes I get really bored. The best thing to do is stimulate the brain, write the notes in bright texas draw pictures if that helps you understand and ask questions. An important thing to help you learn is to know what sort of learner you are. In the first paragraph I mentioned that there are three different types of learners.
If the three different learners wanted to learn how to put together a bike they would each learn better in different ways. The Auditory learner would learn best if he was told the steps that you go through. The visual learner would benefit most from an instruction video or seeing someone put together a bike. The Kinaesthetic learner should just be told to try to put it together himself, no instructions they learn best from doing. If you find out what sort of learner you are you can use it to help you. An auditory learner would learn well from listening to a tape of his lecturers notes.
A visual learner would learn well from going through her notes. Kinaesthetic learners it is hardest for, but the best way for them is to actually do the tasks, the best way for them to learn to write a story is to write one. People have a left and a right brain. Most people have a dominant side.
The left side is the creative side a good artist is probably left brain dominant. The right side of the brain is the numbers and logical side a good mathematician is probably right side dominant. But the great names of history were not dominant they were even and developed on both sides. It is not unlike a bodybuilder. To be good you not only have to be well developed on the left side of your body, your right side needs to be just as developed. Otherwise you are not going to win any of the competitions.
So to be truly great you have to work out both sides of your brain. If you " re left side dominant, work out your budget for the year instead of getting an accountant. If you " re right side dominant, paint or write poems, be creative. Another thing that is just as useful as this is visualisation's and positive thinking. I don't know why it is but it is human nature (not the boy band) to be negative, maybe it is just easier.
But positive thinking is very useful, It makes you feel happy and give you something to thrive on, a reason to flourish. It puts you in the mood to be successful. Visualisations help you to relax and every time you do one you are healing yourself. With so much pressure on students with work, essays, exams relationships.
We are wearing ourselves out, we need to relax and all we do is get ourself more "hyped up" just so we can survive. A visualisation every once in a while lets us take our foot of the accelerator and give our brains and body a metaphorical spa bath. All this Information about how to learn I am now putting into practice. When I feel tired or bored in class now I take a few deep breaths pull out the multi coloured pens and have a sip of water. I make sure that I have a decent breakfast every morning, an hour and forty five minutes is a long haul if you " re starving. I am positive about what I am doing, I know that I am in control and I understand.
When I am at home I keep my blood sugar levels up by chewing in nuts, muesli bars etc. I do mind maps of work to help me remember information. I have just started using this information but I think it will be interesting to see how my marks this term compare to last terms marks. Bibliography:
