COMPARISON EXAM: FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (MOVIE AND FILM) By: Natalie Good QUESTION # 1: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is about two men looking to find the American dream. It is a true story about the author of the book, Hunter S. Thompson, (who is played by Johnny Depp). The story starts when a journalist and his lawyer are assigned to cover a race in Las Vegas in the 60 s. Instead of covering the race, they do massive amounts of drugs and go on adventures in the city. The book and the film are very similar.

This is because the movie is narrated by the main character and so is the book. In the movie the narration is just an edited version of the book, it uses actual passages from it. I find this to be very effective because the book is written in such detail and with such great use of words that it is very visual. The only difference is that the movie actually shows what is going on, as opposed to your imagination. Hunter S. Thompson wrote this story after experiencing this drug binge in Las Vegas, this is what makes the book so effective.

It was true and it was written the way it was actually experienced. If it was to be changed than it would not be real anymore. Both the book and the film cannot be compared to any other book or film because they are very original. I have seen many films about drug use and / or this era. In my opinion none of them were told in the same way. Most movies are shown as stories, they have a beginning, end, climax, epiphany, rise, fall, etc.

In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, you are just watching these character s experience. You couldn t make a line graph out of it. Most movies also, through they re story, display opinions about the issue. For example showing many people overdose on drugs and die. The issue is drugs and the opinion showed is that they are wrong. This film does not say drugs are good or bad, they are just showing what happened.

I have seen the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas many times and I have read the book once. Both are excellent and are strongly recommended for entertainment and drug education. Since they are so similar it is not necessary to watch the film and read the book, but they are both great and offer different qualities you may not want to miss. QUESTION # 2: WHAT IS I ABOUT FILMS THAT MAKES US WHAT TO SEE THEM SO BADLY? The reason that people want to see films so badly is because they lack the excitement in their own lives.

By watching others experience things it fills a void in your life, you re getting the experience by living it through others. The stories shown in films are always so elaborate, so exciting. Most of the situations rarely ever happen in reality (and if they do, you don t get to watch it happen). For us, real people living real lives, our story doesn t end suddenly. Our stories fade away into new ones. This keeps happening until we die.

They are not as clear, and what one person might experience in one day in a movie, the average person will experience over a longer period of time. It may take more than one time to gain the same experience as in a movie. Movies are a surge of emotions, in only 1 - 3 hours we can watch a person go through so much. They can laugh, cry, die, come back to life, lose a loved one, gain a new love, become rich, become poor, become paralyzed, have great sex, have bad sex, have no sex, there is no limit to what someone can go through. In reality, we cry for days and love has a limit.

There are no happy endings. So, basically, if we can t live it, we may as well watch it. Another reason that we watch movies is to learn about the things we may not ever experience. Other lifestyles. We are still living through the characters but in a different way.

For example, not everyone will join the mafia and shoot someone, or be chased by a murderer (fortunately! ), or live through a war, or become a hippy and spend a portion of life on drugs and naked. We may not even get the opportunity. These experiences arouse our curiosity. Whether we want to live them first-hand or not, we still want to know what they are like. So, we watch other people go through them. I am not pessimistic, the truth is that reality does not provide the same excitement as the movies do.

There are more times when I am bored with life than anything else, nobody has ever chased me and told me that they were crazy about me, I have never taken lots of drugs and explored Las Vegas, I have never experienced half of the things I have seen in the movies. But I feel like I have, and that s the point. Movies fill the void. What we miss out in reality we make up in fiction. COMPARISON EXAM: FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (BOOK/FILM)
