I. Introduction When you think of warfare what comes to your mind? Infantry, artillery, guns, grenades, aircraft, tanks, battleships? All of these are the commonly know aspects of war. However, what most of us don t know is that there is often another war going on.

The weapon of destruction used is not anything conventional, but a human being who is willing to risk his life to go beyond enemy lines to get invaluable information on the opponent. They often carry no more than his other disguise. They know the enemy and can become the enemy. They have been used in practically every war from the Revolutionary up to the more resent Gulf war.

Often they changed the course of a battle and even an entire war. Who are these people? They are no more than they. II. The Spy A spy s objective is to infiltrate enemy lines, collect information on the enemy, and safely return to share the information that they have accumulated. However it is not that easy.

In order for it to be successful, only you and your commanding officer must know of you mission. This was a common mistake in early spy missions, they would tell there buddies and other people of their plans and more than once a enemy spy would be near by listening. The penalty of being caught for spying is often death. Thus you don t want to be caught. When a spy has the information that he or she was sent out to get they have to return it.

With fear of being caught they disguise the information. Messages would be put in code, hid in flowers, or sometimes ever sewn into a pattern on a dress. However it was done, it had to be undetectable or else it could be your death sentence. Some spies were successful and national heroes while others weren t that lucky. Whatever there fate was, espionage 1 contributed greatly in every war from the Civil war, to the Cold war, to now a day conflicts in the Middle East and Europe. The CIA 2 and the Pentagon 3 claim that there is no American spies left, but I don t think the spy will ever die.

Now lets take also at some of the first spies that helped us win two of Americas most famous and bloodiest wars that were fought to bring the country together, the Revolutionary and the Civil. III. The Revolutionary War A. Paul Revere Paul was born to Apollos Revere, a French Huguenot, on December of 1734 in Boston. He was one of 12 children. Paul went to North Writing School.

He was taught the art of gold and silver something from his father. When Paul was 19 his father died. He first went to battle, against the French, in September of 1755 at Lake George, New York, where he was a Second Lieutenant. In 1757 Paul married Sarah Orne another had 8 children. When Sarah died in 1773, Paul married yet again and had 8 more children. However what made Paul famous was his horse-back ride on the evening of April 18, 1775.

Also known as, The Midnight Ride (Fig 3: 1) or Paul Revere s Ride. He was informed to ride to Lexington, Massachusetts to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that the British were going to arrest them. On his way Paul stopped at every house warning people that the British where coming. William Dawes was given the same orders but a different route and soon met up with Paul. Then a third rider, Dr. Samuel Prescott, met up with William and Paul.

A British patrol caught up and arrested the three of them. Samuel and Williamescaped and Paul was later released without a horse. He got back to Lexington in time to observe part of the battle on the Lexington Green. B. Nathan Hale Born in 1755 in County, Connecticut, Nathan was one of 12 children. In 1769 helen to Yale and graduated in 1773.

He was a bright and athletic student. Nathan took part in school plays and was a member of the literacy society. After school he taught for about a year, then the war broke out. He immediately insisted into the army. After fighting battles in the Massachusetts area, Nathan was transferred to New York and given the tittle of Captain. He joined agro called the Rangers who fought well and had good leadership skills in dangerous missions.

Nathan volunteered to go through British lines when General George Washington 4 asked the Ranger s commander for a spy. Nathan s friends and colleagues persuaded Nathan not to go but he insisted. This mission couldn t of been planned worse. First, he was inexperienced at spying and received no training. Second the mission was poorly planned, he was given no money and no contact or way of communicating. Finally alot of people knew where has going and what he was suppose to do.

The only thing that was in his favor was thatcher was an order to all ship captains to bring him where ever he needed to go. Over all his mission didn t last to long. It is uncertain whether or not he got the information but he was captured and interrogated. Nathan was hung in September of 1776.

IV. The Civil War A. Belle Boyd She was considered one of the more glamorous confederate spies in the civil war. She was greatly admired by General Stonewall Jackson 5.

Belle had many successful missions, one of which got the Confederates 3, 000 prisoners and hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of supplies. She first decided to become a spy during July of 1861 when a Union solider tried raise a flag over their home and force himself in, she then shot and killed him. Bellewas only 17. This inspired her to become a spy. With her charm, Belle would talk to soldiers and often they would tell her of their plans.

She would also overhear union soldiers talking among themselves. Belle became amateur at secret code. Her intelligence provided General Stonewall Jackson with information that often helped him win many battles. Her career as a spy ended in May of 1868 when she had information to give to Stonewall Jackson. When Belle got to the confederate side, she gave the information two she thought was a Confederate solider but he turned out to be a Union spy and shows captured.

Belle was imprisoned in Washington and later released during a prisoner exchange. She married a man by the name of Sam Wyld Harding and they moved to England. Belle acted in many plays and later wrote the book, Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison. When the war was over she moved back to the United States. B.

Emma Edmonds Emma was a Canadian born nurse who later moved to New England in 1856. When she first heard of the attack on fort Sumter she Immediately volunteered as a Unionnurse and was stationed in Yorktown. When Emma heard that a Union spy was to be executed she once again volunteered to take his place. Her first mission would have her disguised has a Negro worker to find out about troops, fortifications, and enemy plans.

Since Emma was white, she had to wear a wind dye her skin to look black. She crossed enemy lines and was quickly put to work. Emma made sketches of what was going on and would hide any intelligence in the sole other shoe. Her job was originally pushing a wheel barrow but she bribed the water boy to switch with her. She could get more information overhearing the thirsty soldiers. Another time she disguised herself as a Irish woman.

On her way to her destination she came across a abandoned house and inside was a rebel soldier sick with typhoid. She cared for him, and before he died the solider asked her to give a gold watch, that he was wearing, to Major McKee. When she got to where McKee was suppose to be, he was out of town so Emmastarted to walk around the town collecting information. Eventually she found out the number of men they had, the location of the batteries, and what their battle plans were. She was eager to get back but waited for Major McKee first. When he came back to town Emma gave the watch to him.

The soldier that shed cared for was McKee s best friend and he mourned. Emma then showed him where the house was and when he was sleeping she stole his horse and rode back to friendly lines with the information. Emma made many other spy trips all with disguises as convincing as the first. Shows promoted to detective and later would work as a counterspy 6. Emma came down with a sickness and left the service. She wrote the book, Nurse and Spy.

V. Conclusion Napoleon 7 once said, One spy in the right place is worth 20, 000 men in the field. 8 This sense is very true. With all the spies that have been failures, there are those few that have changed the entire outcome of a war. They live double lives and are often considered traitors and outcasts from both their country and the one they are spying on. If the spy didn t exist would the British of defeated us in the Revolutionary War? Would the Confederates of won the Civil War?

Would the Soviet Union ever of got the plans for the Atom of Hydrogen bomb? Would the Allied forces have defeated Germany? These are questions that we will never know. Every spy has had some effect on history from the ones back in the Revolutionary war to the ones in the minds of Hollywood directors. Just one question is left, aether still out there?
