Poem Analysis Dulce et decorum est, by Wilfred Owen, is a poem about the life story of a man who fought in the treacherous battles of World War One. This poem is poignant and presents the thought and truth of war. This poem reminds me of a few movies that I have seen: Saving Private Ryan, and The Thin Red Line. It also However, reminds me of a song that I am familiar with: One by Metallica. I am thankful that kids in this age of time do not have to fight in a war. Many soldiers may say that to die for your country is one of the most honorable ways to die; however personally, I would not want to die for my country.

Each stanza in this poem suggests the deceptive setting in which the poet had taken part in, in World War One. The characters throughout this poem are mainly the troops who are fighting the battle. Other characters here are the poet himself, and a dying soldier. Marching along in the trenches of their battlefield, the troops get attacked by some sort of deadly gas.

In which one unfortunate soldier did not get his mask on in time. Therefore, he inhales the gas and begins to feel the effects of this poisonous substance. Owen talks about us, the readers, following the truck they ride in, and watching this unfortunate man suffer and die. From the images that Owen provides, I personally would not want to fight in any such war. This is a poem that is very emotional. By this I mean it has many different emotions that go along with it.

Touching, scary, and depressing are just a few examples of this impulsive poem. It is scary and depressing, because it describes the brutal and horrifying ways in which an innocent man dies. The poem makes me feel thankful that I do not have to fight in any such war. I would not want to die like that, let alone die at all. I believe that Wilfred Owen wrote this poem because he wants to show people how dreadful and eerie it is to fight in war for your country. I believe he also wants to show us that there is no point in fighting for your country, if all that is bound to happen be innocent lives are going to be taken.

In this poem I have learned that life is extremely sacred, and we should not fight for our country. As there is no point in dying and watching people die, for something they do not believe in. Countries should not use war as a method of problem solving. They should rely on treaties and friendships. Meaning is communicated in this poem by four different techniques the poet used. Owen uses allusion throughout the poem.

He is relating the poem to World War One, which happened over eighty years ago. A second technique Owen uses is imagery. Many of the events that he describes throughout the poem can be pictured. For example, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning (18).

Onomatopoeia is also used quite frequently, hoots (4), choking, drowning (19). Owen also uses metaphors in the poem drunk with fatigue (4) An ecstasy of fumbling (6). In conclusion, I am very thankful that I have not had to fight in any wars.
