Dulce et Decorum Est is one of the most powerful poems ever expressed. The tone of voice and imagery created in your mind, the tension you feel when you read through it, they all make you feel as if you are actually in the poem. The tone of the poem seems to be very antagonistic and bitter. Knock kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge. Is an example of aggressive tone and bitterness. It gives you an idea about the soldiers going barmy on the mud they have to trudge through.

Irritated that there is so much filth that it s making them difficult to move. Sludge and Trudge gives you a heavy feeling. Owen wants you to feel that because mud is heavy. When you walk through it you feel heavy. At the third line of the first stanza, the phrase haunting flares suggests the unforgettable blaze the soldiers saw made by artillery shells. Owen writes the soldiers heading back to safety where the word rest tells us that in the next line.

The first two lines of the poem describes the conditions of the retreating soldiers. The expression dealt with their reminds me of old and powerless people wobbling back to their shelter. Bent-double portrays the soldiers current position, bent down facing the ground. Owen said this because the soldiers were ducking so they aren t as visible to the enemies.

This also gives Owen the idea of beggars since they are always facing down because of shame and misery. Line five, six and seven of the first stanza describes the soldiers conditions in a more detailed form. Owen used neology for the first time in this poem. Blood-shod is a new word that means bloody feet. Many soldiers lost their boots while escaping from the battlefield and so had to retreat barefooted. This gives the readers a revolting and depressing feeling.

An odd thing about line seven is that Owen wrote Drunk with fatigue for describing the soldiers. Personally, I think that Owen is trying to say is that the soldiers appearance looks as if they are drunk due to the fact that they are swinging their arms and limping. The last line of the first stanza talks about Tired and outstripped Five-Nines. Five-Nines is obviously a type of shell since it dropped behind the soldiers. In my opinion Owen used this because firstly it is to have the rhythm in a 2 by 2 pattern (i.

e. Ti-Tum, Ti-Tum, Ti-Tum, Ti-Tum, Ti-Tum) and having a more specific term than just using the word shells which sounds bold. Shells, as we all know, are dead. They do not have any feelings, emotions or responses. Yet Owen wrote them in his poem as tired, outstripped and disappointed.

Owen used personification to describe the incident when the soldiers were running along when suddenly a shell just dropped at the path they just ran through. Owen had the shell feel disappointed and outrun by those soldiers. All this gives you a petrifying and horrendous image in your mind and would think what would happen to the soldiers if they didn t run fast enough. In the first line of the second stanza I noticed that the first gas!

was in lower case then GAS! came in the second one. I assumed Owen did this because he was writing in this part about a soldier spotted a faint green gas coming out of the shell that just hit the ground. Therefore he at first mumbles the word gas, then realising nobody knows, he shouts GAS!

Very loudly. Ecstasy of fumbling in the second line signifies the soldiers quickly and clumsily putting their gas masks on. The tone and mood in these lines, I noticed, are very tensioned and quick. What I mean by quick is that everything seems to be moving very fast. Ecstasy of fumbling and Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time gives you a rapid response to what is happening. The next four lines are very unexpected.

Owen suddenly tells us that there was a soldier who failed to put his mask on and is floundering about, as if he was on fire. In the clouds of gas like the sea, Owen explains that the unfortunate soldier is drowning. Now drowning only occurs in water, you couldn t drown in gas. Yet Owen had the gas as if it was the sea. This is metaphor.

Owen emulated the gas into liquid because it seemed like the soldier was drowning. This is very effective because you don t happen to see in everyday life a person drowning in gas. It makes the whole thing unusual, but fearful. The second line in the third stanza is probably one of the most powerful sentence in the entire poem. Noticing the three -ings at the end of the last three words, it is very effective especially at fear. Plunges is also effective.

It gives you the idea of the soldier leaping at you for help. In the last stanza Owen stuck all of the gruesome parts in there for even more horror and apprehension. The descriptions of the ill-fated soldier in the first eight lines are horrific. Smothering dreams, writhing, hanging face, devil s sick of sin, froth-corrupted lungs are all negative descriptions of the poisoned soldier.

Writhing is twisting or rolling because of his great pain. Owen used hanging face as the appearance of the soldier s face for a couple of reason: The soldier s head could be hanging out of the wagon which result a hanging face or, the soldier s face looked like a person with great depression on it. This makes the readers quite sad and heartrending. Like a devil s sick of sin means like a devil is fed up with doing evil things. So His hanging face, like a devil s sick of sin means the soldier s depressed face is like a devil is sick of doing unpleasant things. Line five and six is, I believe, is the most effective sentence and also the most revolting phrase I ve ever seen.

The reason he wrote at every jolt is because it relates to the wagon and the bumpy ground. Froth-corrupted lungs means liquefied lungs. So the soldier is gargling his own lungs. Totally disgusting, I would say. It is incredibly shocking to everybody who reads this. However it is in fact very effective in terms of expression.

Line seven and eight continues on with the loathsome descriptions. Obscene as cancer is as sickening as a vile disease, Bitter as the cud is as bitter as swallowing your vomit. I had the feeling that Owen is trying to lose our appetite. Yet he is also trying to tell us the experience many soldiers have been through including the one Owen is talking about.

The last four lines conclude on the poem s message: My friend, you would not tell with such high zest to children ardent for some desperate glory. Translation: Dear friend, I greatly recommend you not to be telling your children about war and glory with great eagerness. Owen is trying to explain that you shouldn t tell your next generation about how much glory, honor and respect you would get when you fight for your country and die. Dulce et Decorum est Pro patria mori means It is sweet and fitting to die for your country.

Owen said it is The old Lie because it is not sweet and fitting to suffer and die as a young man just for a pile of soil and dirt. Nothing is to die for, Owen explains in his poem. Therefore Dulce et Decorum est Pro patria mori is a lie. A particular thing about Owen s title and ending is the name, Dulce et Decorum Est and Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. The ending one has pro patria mori while the title doesn t. I found out later that it had a small difference between the two: Dulce et Decorum Est means It is sweet and fitting.

While Dulce et Decorum Est Pro patria mori means It is sweet and fitting to die for your country. So the title isn t considered a lie but the ending is? Three words could make the whole meaning quite different from each other. The last word of every line has a pair of rhyme when they are fitted together. Sacks and backs, blood and cud, glory and mori and so on.

I think that Owen s part of success was based on the rhymes. For myself, I would have a great deal of difficulty trying to make the words rhyme and make sense at the same time. His structure of the poem is also quite unique. Owen split up the two lines between stanza two and four so it has its own stanza (stanza three). It appears that Owen wants these two lines the most effective words in it including the three -ings at the last sentence of the stanza. It occurred to me that the beginning of the poem seemed quite slow when you re reading it.

I suppose it s because of the words that are used like trudge. Then at the realising of the gas attack everything seems to go at full speed. Words like fumbling and floundering makes you have an idea of speediness. Yet at the end of the poem everything seems to be at normal speed. There are no words that speeds things up or slow things down.

I realise that words can make your imagination or thinking at different speeds. The main point on Owen s poem is that going to war isn t as great as many young soldiers thought it would be. There shall be no glory, honor nor admiration whatsoever if you join the army. There is just pity. War of pity. That is Wilfred Owen s idea.
