At the turn of the nineteenth century into the twentieth century women began to get the equality, most women were so desperately fighting for. Women wanted the right to be able to vote in the next election, work in establishments outside of their homes, own land, and to be independent from the traditional male chauvinistic society. Over the years it became a long, grueling, and frustrating task, fighting for their rights, especially for those who led the battles; like one woman, who could be considered the ringleader of all women fighting for their rights, Susan B. Anthony. There were so many oppositions to women getting rights, which allowed them to do all these things such as vote, own land, and work. Once these women do take jobs in paying positions, their husbands realized the extra check really helps with bills, and they wonder how they ever lived without the extra check.

The rights women got were not just given they were earned, and once earned there was a great push by the stronger women of society to have the other women use those newly found rights. In 1897, one of Susan B. Anthony s books, Arena, emphasizes how woman are no longer going to be house wives anymore, the opportunity has arrived for woman to go out on their own and work in vast establishments. Anthony also stressed how the woman should be proud of themselves, they had worked damn hard to get away from the dominance of the male in their home, and a male dominated society. After a few years had come and gone, 1908 arrives and woman begin to make true progress in society, by winning the Muller v. Oregon Supreme Court case.

This was a case, which evaluated the laws that gave women their freedom but weren t totally enforced; ergo what purpose did they serve? The case was mainly a stepping stone really, but a very important one at that. The case took the laws already in existence, which gave women their rights, and put some bite into them. This was brought about as a result form men not letting women have fair working conditions as the men in businesses and such, as well as the men receiving higher priority than that of women. A similar situation was with Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, who revised the Sherman Anti-Trust Act a couple of times to place more bit into that particular law, because it was not enforced properly.

A very good example of the male chauvinistic attitude and little respect men had towards women was a cartoon printed National American Woman Suffrage Association Headquarters newsletter on October 25, 1916. It is a cartoon that had two women walking through a crowd of men who are all making rude comments, and showing very little respect for the ladies walking There were a few exceptions to the rule, there were some women who wanted society to stay the same, and have all the men make their decisions for them, and basically have their husbands or fathers tell them what to do their entire life. Ladies Home Journal wrote an article about that very subject, telling those women who wanted to stay home, to go out and take advantage of the rights they had acquired. Reports that came through weekly journals or magazines showed the progress of women in society. The May 24, 1912 edition of Harper s Weekly was a good example of showing how women were becoming wiser, stronger, better able to protect themselves and their children. This part of this particular article also stresses how the experiences of the women were greater than before as well as a great knowledge and respect for diversity.

There is a picture of the woman s local workplace in document E. This shows one of the jobs women would do for money. In great contrast to this picture is that of the picture in document G, which is a picture of eight women on a vessel, who were construction workers, wearing proper construction attire. When the social trend results came in, in 1922, it showed that women were being supported by their husband as opposed to the previous view by women s husbands, who hated the idea of women in the work place. There were some people who didn t like the idea when birth control came out, because it was supposedly showing there were lots of unwanted babies, and a lot of people were petrified of women not having anymore babies. The issue of women in the work place has always been an issue in the work environment as to whether or not women receive fair treatment.

I believe to most mature men it does not matter if your boss is male or female as long as they do their job and do it well, so in that respect men are getting better at accepting women in the work place, and women are becoming more influential than men in some cases. However when the man is the boss and he has to decide whether to promote a female or male based on performance you can just hope that society has grown enough from the 1800 s style of thinking and make a good choice, not a sexist choice. Women oh a hell of a lot of thanks to people like Susan B. Anthony, who was a leader in getting women the respect and equality with the male competition. 323
