In today s day and age, the use of drugs and alcohol have become a very common practice among our youth. The problem is getting so severe that a large majority of our youth have turned to drugs and alcohol for amusement on a regular basis. The use of drugs and alcohol has always been evident among our youth but in the past five years, numbers of serious abuse cases have risen at a disturbingly high rate. In order to put an end to this horrifying trend, research must be done to examine all aspects of drug and alcohol abuse beginning with user s reasons for experimenting as well as the examination of typical user s characteristics. Along with this information, the effects of drugs and alcohol abuse are a vital key in the understanding of dependency.

The most concerning aspect of drug and alcohol abuse among our youth is the impact it is having on the family unit. Education and rehabilitation are among the two best methods of ridding our society of this horrifying social trend. Alcohol and drug abuse have become very serious problems within today s youth. Teenagers are beginning to abuse their bodies with these substances at much younger ages and it is becoming a very large concern with regards to the well being of Canada s family unit. The first step in dealing with the problem of drug and alcohol abuse among our youth is to find out why people are experimenting at such a young age. Drugs are defined as any substance, other than food, which is taken to change the way the body or mind functions.

Most drugs taken by youth are considered psychoactive drugs. These types of drugs are taken to alter the way a person thinks, feels and acts. Not all psychoactive drugs are illegal, but the ones that are usually have a much more dangerous effect on the user. Drug users have many similar characteristics even though anyone can become one. Low self-esteem is the most common traits in drug users. Most drugs give the user a higher self-esteem, therefor making them feel good about themselves.

Other reasons for beginning the use of drugs include curiosity, social pressure, previous drug use, and the most tragic, dependence. There are those individuals who experiment with drugs and never try them again, but the majority begin to feel the psychological addiction after their first experience. This then leads to a physical dependence, which can be very damaging to the body of the drug user. Much like drugs, there are many different types of alcohol whose effect can also vary on the user.

There are many misconceptions about alcohol that can easily lead to alcohol abuse. Many people underestimate the powers of a few drinks until its too late. The reasons for experimentation with alcohol are almost exact to those of drug use. Curiosity and social pressure are the most common among the many reasons. Another misconception about alcohol is that it isn t as harmful as the use of drugs. The use of alcohol is just as damaging as the use of drugs to the human body, just in different ways.

Both alcohol and drug abuse can lead to a condition referred to as dependence. This is when the user attains a very serious psychological and physical addiction to the substance. In most cases, users feed their dependence to point in their lives when they can no longer function within the norms of society. Sadly, dependence to drugs and alcohol is one of the major causes of suicide and poor health related deaths in Canada. The majority of drug and alcohol users don t understand the severity of what they are doing to their bodies. The effects of both drugs and alcohol can have long lasting effects on the body both physically and mentally.

What makes these effects even more serious is that many of them are permanent and can become even more severe with time. Some of the overlooked side effects of psychoactive drugs are, reduction of coordination and distortion of judgement. These can lead to serious safety risks, especially if the user drives a car or operates heavy machinery on a regular basis. The majority of drug and alcohol users don t realize that these substances can impair their motor and thinking skills even while not on the substance.

The health risks of drugs are also very underestimated by users and the general public. Even the less serious drugs such as marijuana can lead to lung cancer, which is the leading cause of death in Canada. In most surveys completed for this research paper, individuals who have experimented with the use of marijuana claim that they used marijuana because they thought it was harmless to their bodies. Effects of marijuana on the body stem from a reduction of brain energy to a severely weakened immune system. These are just two of the many harmful effects of marijuana, making it obvious that this particular drug is much more harmful than the majority of society thinks.

In fact, regular use of marijuana can, in some way, have an effect on seventy five percent of the body s organs. The severity of marijuana is still of great concern to health officials, but not as severe as some they have for the many other drugs being used. One of the most horrifying drugs being used in Canada is cocaine. Cocaine is usually sold as a sticky white substance that is obtained from leaves off the coca plant. It is an extremely powerful stimulant that speeds up the central nervous system.

The fast peak of cocaine is what makes the drug so addictive. The effects cocaine has on the human body are devastating. These include memory loss, constant twitching, impaired vision, as well as the presence of many chemical imbalances in the body that can lead to heart attacks and even paralysis. The dependency rate of cocaine has skyrocketed in the past five years. This statistic is consistent with the dependence of alcohol, especially among Canada s youth.

Adolescents consider themselves invisible, therefor overlooking the harmful effects of alcohol. Short term, alcohol can have an extremely harmful effect on the human brain. Different types of alcohol have different effects on the body, but they all contain the same toxin; alcohol. Alcohol has the capabilities to kill brain cells at an alarming rate. This slows down the functions of the brain, in turn slowing down the body s movements and capabilities. Alcohol has many long term effects on the body, many of which are life threatening.

Physically, alcohol slows down the body s metabolism which can lead to weight gain and poor circulation. Both these conditions can lead to heart attacks, which are common among alcoholics. The most serious consequence of alcohol abuse is liver disease. This occurs when the alcohol deteriorates the liver to the point where it can no longer function. Liver disease has an extremely high death rate as it is one of the more crucial organs found in the human body. Both alcohol and drugs cause severe damage to the human body, both physically and mentally.

The amount of substance abuse found within today s youth is very alarming. The health risks are very troubling and something needs to be done to save the lives of Canada s youth There is not one aspect of drug and alcohol abuse among our youth that is not alarming in one way or another. Most often, families are the most overlooked unit in cases of drug and alcohol abuse. The family and friends of drug or alcohol abusers have a very difficult time watching their loved one s life slowly wasting away. A variety of things should be done by parents to help insure they re children stay drug and alcohol free. Education should be a parent s first priority when it comes to drugs and alcohol.

It is common for parents to think their children go through the same problems that they encountered growing up. Parents must understand the different problems their children face each day and adapt to them. Children must understand the expectations their parents have for them. Parents should casually explain these expectations, along with the consequences that may follow if broken. Most importantly, parents should maintain the idea of love in their relationship with their children. Even in the later years of adolescence, a feeling if love and importance may be the key to keeping them drug and alcohol free.

The most devastating cases are those which come by surprise to parents. Many parents are unaware of their children s activities outside the home until its too late. There are various symptoms expressed by children when they have begun the use of drugs or alcohol on a regular basis. One of the first changes may be a different selection of friends or associates. Many times, children are forced into different social groups by peer pressure or a need for companionship. Alcohol and drug users may also express a lack of interest in a variety of activities, such as school or sports.

Other symptoms of drug or alcohol abuse are, mood swings, impaired motor skills, dilation of pupils or even appetite fluctuations. Some of these signs and symptoms are not unlike the characteristics of most teenagers growing up these days, however they should not be ignored. If these signs are consistent with the child, parents should not overreact since this may irritate the child and make the situation even worse. Upon discovery of a drug or alcohol related problem, parents should immediately make an attempt to discuss the issue with their child. It is important to show signs of disappointment toward the child, not anger.

Anger may further complicate the already troubling time in the individual s life. Following the initial confrontation, it is important for parents to show endless amounts of support, encouragement, and love. This is a very difficult situation for an adolescent to handle on his own. There are many different ways of handling drug and alcohol abuse, depending on the seriousness of the addiction. In order to determine the seriousness of the addiction, there are dependency tests that will benefit in the user s choice of treatment. (Appendix 1, 2) Another activity that is beneficial to the individual is a Inventory of Drug Taking Situation questionnaire. (Appendix 3) This helps determine what situations make the user most susceptible to drinking, along with the seriousness of his addiction. The results of this test give the user an accurate layout of certain situations to stay away from during the process of rehabilitation.

The process of rehabilitation is a very long process, especially for younger individuals. The social pressures faced by younger individuals are far greater than those of older individuals, therefor enhancing the temptation for repeated use. Rehabilitation itself involves many steps. It is important for users to follow the guidelines specified by their rehabilitation councilor. Such guidelines include, regular attendance at rehabilitation meetings, as well as one on one counseling sessions.

Many rehabilitation councilors suggest that users keep a daily diary describing their struggles and accomplishments throughout the day. This gives recovering users a chance to revisit the past they once hated, reminding them never to go back. Once recovered from his or her addiction, individuals are encouraged to participate in community orientated organizations such as Youth Against Substance Abuse, a program that travels to area schools talking to kids about the harmful effects of substance abuse. (Appendix 4) There are many different ways of rehabilitating a drug or alcohol addicted individual, but in order for it to be successful, the user must be committed to put an end to his problem. In the past, methods of forced rehabilitation proved to be failures due to extremely high withdrawal and suicide rates.

It is impossible to stress the importance of rehabilitation being the user s choice, and no one else s. It is important that society s youth understand the rewards of staying sober. The effects of drugs and alcohol on the human body are quite serious and can lead to many serious illnesses, even death. Fortunately there are now many programs that educate both parents and children on staying drug and alcohol free. The number of these programs is still minimal compared to what Canada needs to make an impact on it s youth. Drug and alcohol abuse cases among youth are still on the rise and are posing a serious risk for both the health of Canada s youth and the wellbeing of Canada s family unit.

The advantages of staying sober are far more appealing than those envisioned by the use of drugs and alcohol. Unfortunately this message seems to be eluding the minds of Canada s youth posing an enormous task for all parties involved in the fight against substance abuse.
