History has proven that the human curiosity for science and technology can sometimes lead to horrific disasters. In Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde he explores the idea that man, through his scientific studies, maybe disturbing the balance that God has set forth for all his creations and there fore unleashing great evil onto the earth.

The story begins as Mr. Gabriel John Utterson takes a walk with his close friend, Richard Enfield, as they do every Sunday. On this walk Utterson discovers a rather peculiar door and asks Enfield if he knows anything about the strange door. Enfield regrettably says that he knows a story behind that door.

He then goes into detail describing how he saw an unexplainably evil man trample a young girl with no remorse and after the evil man preformed this hideous act he disappeared behind the strange door. Utterson becomes completely infatuated with the evil man known as Mr. Hyde. Enfield revealed that the strange door was part of Dr. Henry Jekyll's estate.

Upon recalling this information Utterson immediately views Jekyll's will, which states that if any thing should ever happen to him than Mr. Hyde was to inherit everything in his possession. Utterson, being a good friend to Dr. Jekyll, concludes that Dr. Jekyll must be in serious trouble and fears that Mr. Hyde will murder Dr.

Jekyll in order to inherit all that he is worth. Utterson begins to watch the strange door and as soon as he sites Mr. Hyde he has a sort conversation with him and realizes the mans true evil. Utterson travels to Dr.

Jekyll's estate to find out why he is consorting with such a person as Mr. Hyde. Upon mentioning Mr. Hyde to Dr. Jekyll his cheerful face becomes pale and uneasy. Dr.

Jekyll says that his relation ship with Mr. Hyde is a painful and strange one and he cannot explain any more. Utterson offers to help Jekyll rid himself of this painful relationship, but Jekyll is reluctant to accept and he says that their relationship is not so bad that it need be terminated. At the end of the conversation Dr. Jekyll makes Utterson promise that he will follow through with the instructions listed in his will; Utterson reluctantly agrees.

It is soon learned that Mr. Hyde had murdered a well-known and respected man by the name of Sir Danvers Carew. Utterson again begins to fear for Jekyll's life and he goes to Jekyll in hopes that he will reveal the location of Mr. Hyde so that he can be locked up. Dr. Jekyll, however, says that they would never fine Mr.

Hyde, fore he has gone away to some place where he will be found Prior to Mr. Hyde's disappearance Dr. Jekyll appeared to be seriously ill, mentally and physically, but after Mr. Hyde vanished Jekyll returned to optimum health and he remained that way for a short period of time, until he had a complete relapse and become very ill. Soon after Dr. Jekyll falls ill, Doctor Lanyon becomes equally inflected by a strange illness that seems to be caused by fear.

When Utterson goes to Lanyon and asks what happened he will not discussed the incident that shocked him into his sickness. Utterson mentions Dr. Jekyll and Lanyon nearly jumps out of his skin and says that he will never talk about Dr. Jekyll ever again. Shortly after this incident Doctor Lanyon passes away. Concerned about Dr.

Jekyll, Utterson travels to Jekyll's house to see what had happened between Jekyll and Lanyon, but to his dismay, he discovers that Jekyll has slipped into a state of painful remorse and he does not seem to be himself. Jekyll will not discuss the incident that occurred between him and Lanyon, but he agrees that Lanyon died of shock. Jekyll's health becomes worse and worse, he orders his servants to get him drugs everyday, but none seem to have any affect on his horrible condition. When Utterson catches word of the horrible state that Dr. Jekyll is in he immediately returns to Jekyll's estate to talk to him and to see how he can help.

He finds that Jekyll has locked himself in his room and he will not let anyone in. Out of desperation Utterson and Poole, Jekyll's chief servant, break down the door only to find Mr. Hyde dying violently, shaking furiously with muscle spasms. Poole and Utterson quickly comb the house for Dr. Jekyll but they do not find him. Utterson then opens a letter that Dr.

Jekyll gave to him to read only after his ultimate demise had come. It stated that Dr. Jekyll should read the testimony of Doctor Lanyon and if he dared to know more information he was to read a large sealed envelope that Poole had in his possession. The short narrative authored by Lanyon described the incident that lead to his death. Lanyon had seen Mr. Hyde change into Dr.

Jekyll after drinking a solution. After the change Jekyll explained his experiments and Lanyon was so horrified that he went into shock and died. The narrative explained no more, so Utterson turned to the large envelope. The envelope explained the true nature of Dr. Jekyll's experiments.

It confessed that he was trying to separate the good side of man from the evil and that he had succeeded. Mr. Hyde was Dr. Jekyll's pure evil side that was freed whenever he drank a solution that he had concocted. He confessed in this letter that he enjoyed being Mr. Hyde, that living without a conscience was immensely fun.

He began to like being Mr. Hyde so much that he often drank the separating solution and roamed the streets at night enjoying needless rage and lust. After a while Dr. Jekyll could not control Mr.

Hyde and he began involuntarily becoming the deformed man. He decided to put Mr. Hyde back inside of him for good, but he could not recreate the solution, which had unleashed Mr. Hyde. It seemed that the salts he used for the original solution were impure and that unknown impurity was what made the solution work.

Dr. Jekyll soon could not control Mr. Hyde and the two personalities fought until they both died. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was a brilliant novel that displayed how science and technology can be detrimental to mankind.

When most people think of science and technology they think of advancements that raise the quality of life. Robert Louis Stevenson, however, explores the idea that science and technology only bring evil because tampering with what God put on this earth is blasphemous. Though out Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Stevenson describes Mr. Hyde as being inherently evil.

All the characters in the novel that meet Hyde agree that he has truly been marked by the devil. Since Mr. Hyde is wicked and he is the product of science one can conclude that science is to blame for unleashing this devilish creature. Dr.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde makes its readers think about other forms of technology and science in different ways. This novel really makes a person think about weather science and technology is good or bad. One may think of the discovery of nuclear fission. This discovery gave humans a cheap way to make electricity and a powerful weapon to use in times of war, nuclear fission certainly benefits mankind, or does it? The way Stevenson suggests we view science implies that nuclear fission only brought harm to earth and to humans.

It kills thousands of people in seconds when used in a nuclear bomb and when used to make electricity accidents often happen, causing great damage to the environment and to people in surrounding areas. Robert Louis Stevenson suggests in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that humans should think twice about what scientific areas they explore, fore the results may be contrast the moral intentions of the scientists exploring the field.
