The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. It is actually a portrayal of Stevenson s own life. Stevenson suffered from a series of nightmares in which he lived a double life. In the day he worked as a respectable doctor, but in the night he was forced to fall victim to a monster who roamed the alleys of his own town.

Stevenson decided to write about his experiences rather than hide from them. So within a matter of three days, Stevenson wrote a manuscript that detailed his mysterious life. Thus was the book known today as, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The quote below gives a vivid description about Dr Jekyll s unusual habits and the environment in which he is living, An ivory-faced and silvery-haired old woman opened the door.

She had an evil face, smoothed by hypocrisy; but her manners were excellent. Yes, she said, this was Mr. Hyde s, but he was not at home; he had been in that night very late, but had gone away again in less than an hour; there was nothing strange in that; his habits were very irregular, and he was often absent; for instance, it was nearly two months since she had seen him till yesterday. Pg. 17 I found this quote to be a wonderful representation for Mr.

Hyde/ Dr. Jekyll s true character. The author did a wonderful job portraying an environment that created a peculiar tone. The old woman in the passage above has a suspicious quality that gives a mysterious impression to the book.

Overall, I feel that the author, Robert Louis Stevenson, has done a wonderful job portraying the physiological agony that he must have endured while in his metal state of uncertainty. I believe that the author wrote the book for himself rather than for the enjoyment of others. I my personal opinion, I think that Stevenson was trying to escape his nightmares through writing about his situation. The book was a type of security blanket that he could feel secure in and avoid the fears of reality. In general, I look forward to reading about the atrocities that Mr. Hyde creates for Dr.

Jekyll to discover. I also am interested in Dr. Jekyll s reaction to the actions of his darker side.
