Donne s Holy Sonnet Five confronts multiple inner spiritual and physical struggles while twisting together the struggles between science and religion. With the author claiming himself as a little world, he uses the metaphor to tie together both his physical and the spiritual struggles with evil. The poem then becomes not just a personal piece but a religious political one confronting the new discoveries of the world. Donne s cunning battle between himself and evil seems to reflect nicely with his concern of science s new discoveries. He ends his poem echoing the passage from Psalm 69. 9 and showing the weave of the three fires found within himself and within the path of God s ways. The sonnet is a variation of the Italian octave form.

It is syntactically organized and doesn t rhyme. The author has distorted the traditional stanzaic patterns by making the last two quatrains five lines and deleting the ending couplet. The author uses the first quatrain to introduce him as if he was an actual world thus playing on the scientific concept of a world made of elements, and a world composed of spirituality: I am a little world made cunningly Of elements, and an angelic sprite; But black sin hath betrayed to endless night My world s both parts, and O, both parts must die. Right away the reader interprets that the author is a little world and can see the comparison of how this world is made both of elements which refers to the material substances that the world is composed of, and of angelic sprite which refers to his spirituality. He then continues with how evil, black sin, has seduced the both parts of his world. This seduction is the betrayal that he mentions and the both parts actually means that the evil has affected him physically, like sexual interaction, and spiritually as if the thoughts of the lust and sex or deceit have taken space in his mind and soul.

There is an underlying point to these metaphors because he first describes himself as this world made cunningly of elements, and here he introduces newly found discoveries of the world and the universe at the time. Suddenly, the world has more meaning for writers like Donne, outside of God, and when he claims that both parts must die he is referring to the both parts that are affected by sin and also the concept of how this new world is viewed as being more than just God s creation. The second quatrain turns and addresses the scientists, or men, who have discovered the new concepts and lands of the world: You which beyond that heaven which was most high Have found new spheres, and of new lands can write, Pour new seas in mine eyes, that so I might Drown my world with my weeping earnestly, Or wash it if it must be drowned no more. The author addresses the You which represents the founders of the new spheres and [the] new lands.

He is mocking their discoveries by stating how they are beyond that heaven which was most high. He then compares them to gods as if they could pour new seas in his eyes which also echoes a traditional baptismal ceremony. He wants them to pour the seas so that he can drown [his] world of the sins, just like a Baptism accomplishes. The author proceeds to come back to the physical reality when he continues with requesting them to wash it if it must be drowned no more. The first offers a spiritual cleansing and now he requests the physical cleansing in order to clean up the physical part of his filthy world. The drowning represents the suffocation he desires of God s love and ways since he feels trapped in his endless night and seeks this escape and end to his evil ways.

The last quatrain is where the author steps into the pages of the bible and echoes the passage from Psalm 69. 9: But O, it must be burnt! Alas, the fire Of lust and envy have burnt it heretofore, And made it fouler let their flames retire, And burn me, O Lord, with a fiery zeal Of thee and thy house, which doth in eating heal. He begins with a frustrated tone and the opening line is as if he has stopped from being distracted and proclaims, But O, it must be burnt! The Psalm 69. 9 involves three sorts of flames and they are of judgement, lust and envy, then ending with the flame of zeal. The judgement in this sonnet can be found throughout the first two quatrains up until this point. Donne is judging himself, his world, and the newly found battles between science and religion.

When he states that it must be burnt he wants the burning sensation of zeal, the eager desires of God s ways, to burn him. He says how the flames of lust and envy have burnt and made him, this world, vile and it is now time for God s burning sensations to take over. He addresses God when he says to let the lust and envy flames retire. He ends with him telling God to burn him with the fiery zeal of God s house.

The zeal echoes the enthusiastic diligence he desires to contain so that he may have constant and earnest exertion of body and mind, of the physical and spiritual, through God s way because he knows that these are what heal; these will save him.
