Do the Right Thing The first scene of the film begins with a zoom out of three things: Senor Love Daddy, a clock and a microphone. The microphone represents the lack of communication in the neighborhood, the clock shows that they are running out of time and that something bad will happen soon, and Senor Love Daddy is the voice of reason. The lighting in this scene is low-key, and there is a reddish color which is present in all four of the scenes, this shows the intense heat of the day. The first thing that he says is Wake Up telling everyone that they have to wake up to the world around them, he wants them to see the problems that are in the neighborhood instead of ignoring them like they are doing. As the camera zooms out even more we see that there are four hats right in front of Senor Love Daddy, this shows that he is accepting of all cultures. We also see that the radio station faces the street, this shows that he is always looking at the neighborhood.

As we zoom out even more we can see the name of the radio station and it says We Love. The scene ends when camera zooms out even more and begins to track to the left to show the rest of the neighborhood. In the next scene the first thing which is noticed is the intense red color, the color shows how hot the day is going to be. The camera is on a high angle zooming in to someone sleeping, the person who is sleeping almost appears as if he were dead because he is laying so still. We can also see an old radio that is playing Senor Love Daddy s message to Wake Up, this ties the first scene and the second scene together. As we get closer we see it is a black man he appears to be tired and hot, he looks out the window and lies back down.

Another thing that should be pointed out are the bottles and trash which are lying all over the room, this shows that the man is not rich. In the first shot of scene three we see a white male with a radio playing speeches of Malcolm X and standing in front of a red brick church handing out pictures. A low-angle shot is used and this make the church and the man seen to be extremely large, unlike the scene before you can notice that the lighting is high-key and the there are little or no shadows. The man is wearing a red shirt which can be taken as a warning to others that danger is close. As we move on to the next shot we get a close up of the picture that the man is holding up, it is a picture of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. He is trying to warn people that there is a problem in the neighborhood.

Unfortunately nobody is listening to him, and as the movie continues the character is usually ignored because of his disability, but if they had listened to him the conflict in the end of the movie could have been avoided. The next shot has the same setup as the first the man continues to preach, he mentions the word apartheid but because of his speech impairment he pronounces it apart-hate which also represents the type of attitude that is in the neighborhood. Another thing in this scene is the church in the background, throughout the movie the church never seems to get involved with the community and the only people who are seen going into the church are the elderly. The first shot of the fourth scene starts with a really strong back light and the shades have an red color which make the whole room appear to be red.

It also appears to be hazy which shows the there was a filter used for this scene. The camera in the scene is about waist height this is done because the character in the scene is sitting down. All we can see in the first shot is a person doing something. The camera in the next scene stays about the same, we are now behind the person and zooming in, almost as if we were sneaking up on him. We can now see that he is African-American, wearing a Michael Jordan jersey, and is counting a large sum of money. Spike Lee does this so we stereotype the character, he wants us to think that because he is black and has money he is involved in something illegal, but we soon find out that he has a job and is trying to save his money.

The next scene shows a close up of a women who is sleeping, the Mookie gets on top of her and tries to wake her up. This shows that Mookie is still very immature, just because he has to wake up and go to work he wants to bother other people around him. 32 c
