Diabetes: The Silent Killer You sink into your oversized bean bag, tears flowing down your face. You just got back from the doctors office. Your test came back and you are the results are positive-your diabetes has been confirmed! You knew you had to be careful because your dad has it, but now you? Your life is falling apart. Just as you are about to break down crying again, your email system rings on your computer, You have mail.

You open it, expecting junk mail, instead it is titled Diabetes. Interested, you scroll down, it reads as follows To begin with, we should know a little about how diabetes works. All the food we eat, from the piece of gum we accidentally swallow to the pizza we have for breakfast, is turned into a special kind of sugar, glucose, our body burns for energy. The pancreas, an organ that is near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin. Insulin assists the glucose to get to the cells in our body, like a chauffeur. When a person has diabetes, the pancreas doesn t make enough insulin, or the body doesn t use it properly.

This is a serious disease, it will cause death if it is not properly looked after and cared for. There are two major types of diabetes. There is type I and type II, easy enough. Type I requires insulin injections.

One can not take insulin in a pill, the stomach acids will destroy it. It has to be injected directly into the blood stream. With type I, the pancreas fails to produce and release large enough quantities of insulin. Without this supply of insulin, the required nutrients that keep a cell going are useless. The nutrients remains in the body as glucose, and then are passed out of the body through the urine. The risk factors for this type are not as well defined as those for type II.

Autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors all play a part in type I diabetes. Also, people under 40 have a greater chance of getting type I. Type II does not require insulin injections for it is abundantly supplied, but the body s cells somehow block the insulin s ability to absorb glucose. This renders the glucose unusable and again, it ends up being passed out though the urine stream. People that are over 40, grossly over weight, have a family history of diabetes, have had gestational diabetes (a temporary diabetes that develops in 2 %- 5 % of all pregnancies, but disappears after birth), and / or are physically inactive, have a greater risk of acquiring type II diabetes. Native Americans, Hispanics, African American, and Asians are at even a greater risk of getting type II diabetes.

There are many symptoms of diabetes. As you read this list, take note of the number following each symptom or sign. If you commonly experience it, write down the number. At the end, add up the numbers you have written. If the total exceeds 7, you should see a doctor about possible diabetes.

Here we go. Are you always tired? Then add a two. Have you been urinating an excessive amount? Add a four. Always hungry?

Add two. Crave extra liquids (more than 10 glasses a day)? Add four. Unexplained weight loss?

Add two. How about wounds that wont heal? Gotta add two. Does a family member have diabetes? Add two. Are you overweight?

If your waist measurement is more than 1 / 2 your height, then you are. Add two. Is there a constant numbness or tingling in your feet? Add three.

Is your blood glucose above 140? Oops, add ten! If you have blurred vision, add two. For you ladies, are you having frequent vaginal infections? You better add three.

Last, but certainly not least, for the guys, have you had or do you frequently have difficulty with erections? If so, add two. How did ya do? If you got more than 7, go back and double check. Keep in mind, all the things that are listed are the most common signs and symptoms of diabetes. They are also not, Oh, that happened to me when I was five, I think.

They normally happen routinely Scientists dont really know how one gets diabetes. There are, however, a few theories. One would be that a virus that the body gets during birth. This one is the newest and least accepted. The second is that the pancreas is dysfunctional or is diseased. This would explain type I, but leaves type II out, this one has been rejected.

The third and most accepted theory is that diabetes is present during birth, and takes many years to be activated. By going with this theory, diabetes is inherited, sometimes skipping generations, but turning up some time in the family tree. There is no cure for diabetes. However, scientists think that if they can replace more than 70 % of a diabetes victim s islet cells, the ones that produce insulin, with working ones, the victim will be rid of diabetes. They are also pursuing a pancreas transplant, artificial pancreas development, and genetic manipulation. Genetic manipulation (as quoted from source 2) would work like so: Fat or muscle cells that don t normally make insulin have a human insulin gene inserted then these pseudo islet cells are transplanted into people with type I diabetes.

While there is no cure, there are ways to treat and stabilize diabetes. There are five major factors that go into it. These are diet, exercise, medication, monitoring, and motivation. The easy way to remember this is the five m s: meals, medication, motivation, monitoring, and motion. The five of these have to be carefully balanced to maintain a blood sugar level that is par with your personal standards.

As with any disease, there are complications if the problem isn t looked after properly. Some of the complications that diabetics can look forward to if they aren t careful are heart disease, blindness, foot disorders, gangrene, and psychological complications. Diabetes effects all of your body parts, except your lungs. Closing the letter, you feel a little better, at least now you know a little about your newly diagnosed problem. You plan to talk to your knowledgeable health teacher on Monday.

You want to know everything about diabetes, remembering that what you dont know can hurt you.
