Same-Sex Marriages? Alex knows that his family is unusual, to say nothing about his conception. In 1982, a family friend bicycled an oyster jar of his own sperm over to Bonnie's [Tinker] house. [Bonnie] She administered the insemination herself. Alex [Tinker] considers Bonnie and Sara [Graham] his parents.

But the father occasionally takes Alexa long with his own children hiking or biking? (Shapiro and Gregory 2). This example is a prime reason of unacceptable behavior carried on by same-sex partners in today? s society. According to the many religious beliefs, same-sex marriages are immoral and sinful. It is understandable that not all people believe this statement, and we do have freedom of religion in the United States of America. One must see this issue from the point of view of a homosexual in order to fully understand the many controversies present in today?

s society. Being gay and loving another person is not illegal, but uniting that couple in marriage is rejected by most of society. ? Many people are unaware that legalized homosexual marriage is a probability, nor are they aware of the nearness of this situation. As things stand now, there is a better than 90 % probability that homosexual marriage will be legalized? (?

New Storm Brewing? ? 1). Courts in Hawaii would not allow same-sex marriages, and that is now being looked at as unconstitutional. Disallowing these marriages is discrimination against homosexuals, which is a non-constitutional act. Even though same-sex marriages are considered immoral by the many religions, according to our laws there is no reason why these marriages shouldn? t take place. Although laws do not make same-sex marriages illegal, there should be limitations.

Same-sex marriages should be examined because they often wrongfully affect the well being of children, jeopardize the nature and rights of modern families, and wrongfully disobey many religions. Marriages of the same-sex should not involve children. There is no natural way that two people of the same-sex could have children; therefore, they should not be given custody of a child or the ability to adopt a child. Rules and regulation have recently been written in order to prohibit such situations. Government on the national level is proposing to ban Second-parent adoptions, which in the past have been approved. These regulations would require marital status to be given to the Department of Social Services.

Many people have pushed for the approval of this regulation in order to protect innocent children from being placed in an unstable family. Another difficult situation that has been known to arise is when one parent of a marriage finds out that he or she is gay. The adjustment is a struggle for children who think they are a typical heterosexual family to find out suddenly that one of their parents in gay (Shapiro and Gregory 2). All too often children are put into this situation, and some have a hard time coping with the repercussions. Children who have parents of the same-sex are often unbearably harassed by other children and considered an outcast. An innocent child put in a situation that would be emotionally stressful for most of their youth is not necessary.

Just imagine what a child would go through. ? Billy, which one of your dads wore the dress in the wedding? ? or? Suzy, which one of your moms is coming to the mother-daughter picnic? ? Why put kids in an environment that is not morally or socially acceptable in today? s society?

It is often hard to let friends, family, and other people with whom you interact know that you are homosexual, or that you have homosexual parents. This was very noticeable in the case of Josh Gehman, when he had to explain to his fianc? about his homosexual parents. He stated?

My marriage fell apart over my wives discomfort with her lesbian in-laws? (Shapiro and Gregory 2). Many critics are also arguing that children of gay parents have a higher tendency to become gay themselves. Michael Bailey from Northwestern University says, ? they are finding rates on the order of 10 % of the offspring of gay parents who turn out gay themselves, higher than the generally accepted range between 1 % and 4 % of the population? (Shapiro and Gregory 3). Gay parents will not cause a child to become gay, but that child is being deprived of crucial, necessary two-sex ingredients essential in parenting. It takes a man and a woman to produce a child, which is the most basic proof that a child needs a mother and a father to be parented correctly.

Having a companion of the same-sex should never result in being harassed, hated, or hurt. Sadly, being in a same-sex relationship should also never result in marriage or adoption. Everything in life has a price. Being parent less is a high price. A childs basic needs must always supersede the desires of an adult.

Children must always come before self. Another reason why same-sex marriages should have limitations is that the traditional family is being radically challenged in today? s society. The institution of marriage between man and woman is the basis of every civilized society. Religion and morality aside, common sense dictates that marriage and family can only exist between a man and a woman. Rather than the traditional family beginning with Adam and Eve, homosexual partners prefer to view marriage as a union between Adam and Steve.

This way of thinking can create many problems in a family setting. Heidi Frazier is the daughter of a couple who recently separate when the father realized that he was gay. Heidi now lives with her dad and his partner in a small town in Illinois. With the split-up of her parents, her family life was ruined in an instant. To top everything off, Heidi found out four years ago that her dad was diagnosed HIV positive, though he has yet to have developed symptoms of AIDS. ?

It made us all face the fact that the family could end at any time? that someone could die? (Hewitt and Sandler 3). This break-up with Heidi? s parents has ruined their family relations, and made her life more difficult then needed to be. Similarly, Julie Olavarria found out that her mother was gay in seventh grade after being married for several years. This distressed Julie greatly, and she began to gain weight, developed anorexia and bulimia, which lasted three years.

She often told her parents that at times she would have rather grown up in a more conventional household (Hewitt and Sandler 5). Within these two examples, another dilemma lies. Healthcare and company benefits are often not given to unmarried couples. This makes it difficult for homosexuals who are HIV positive, or kids of a homosexual family.

Many employers state that, ? heterosexual employees can marry? and thus get family benefits? but homosexuals cannot? (? Domesticated Bliss? 2). Marriage is the basis of family life, and families are central to civilization.

The law doesnt discriminate against homosexuals; it merely says that each sex must be represented in marriage. Same-sex couples do not qualify. It might be called a partnership, but if its called marriage, its a counterfeit version. Counterfeit versions of marriage drive out the real thing. Finally, same-sex marriages should be limited for religious reasons.

For example, in modern Christian culture, marriage is looked upon as a holy union of two into one. You can have a religious ceremony for same-sex couples, but its not a religious sacrament. Max Stackhouse, a professor of Christian ethics at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, stated that, ? At the same time, most churches agree that homosexual relationships are not ideal. They are not something the church should praise or celebrate? (Heim 1). Many believe the relationship between males and females enact as a completion of each person (Heim 6).

David Heim stated that, ? Christians would say that it is the male? female relationship as given in creation that is part of the structure needed for our sexual lives to be accord with God? s intent (Heim 2). Within ancient Christianity, the notion of the union of two wholly separate people into one was very strange. Some people believe that the Christian view of nature, created by God, should be recognized universally.

This is not possible. Not everyone believes in the idea of God. Even people who do believe in the idea of a Christian God dont necessarily see marriage as it was envisioned in Christs time. We must analyze our actions, and make sure that we are living our lives according to God? s purpose. Stackhouse stated, ?

Because if we lose our intentionally obscure ideal, we blur the vision of God? s law, purpose, and love as governing norms? (Heim 9). Making homosexual activity the equivalent of married conjugal love, as the legalization of same-sex? marriage? would do, does no favors to the homosexual person or to society. It wrongfully affects the well being of children by depriving them of the essential ingredients of parenting.

It also gives the homosexual relationship an identity and status that essentially jeopardizes the nature and rights of the family. Most strongly, the Bible clearly states that same-sex marriages are immoral and sinful. Many people deem homosexual activity and certain life styles as immoral and objectionable. Mike Gabbard of the National Campaign To Protect Marriage sums it up best by stating, Opposing homosexual? marriage?

is not about hate, homophobia or bigotry. In reality, protecting marriage as the union of one man and one woman is about love and compassion. Real compassion and love is not shown by pretending that homosexual behavior is normal and natural. We don? t relate to alcoholics by glorifying their alcoholism or to drug addicts by celebrating their addiction.

It? s not compassionate to encourage people to take pride in behavior that is destroying themselves and society as well. We should be reaching out to those who are addicted to homosexual behavior and encouraging them to join the countless thousands of former homosexuals? both men and women? who are now free from this destructive lifestyle. But make no mistake.

Legalizing same-sex? marriage? is an attack by homosexual activists and their supporters on the moral foundations of this country. They are committed to redefining the sacred institution of marriage. Legally sanctioning so-called homosexual? marriage?

is a blatant attempt to normalize homosexual behavior, to change the hearts and minds of American people so that we will accept homosexuality on an equal basis as heterosexuality. Those who are pushing for legalizing homosexual? marriage? are the aggressors in this battle. We are simply trying to defend two crucial institutions which are the backbone of American culture? marriage and the family (?
