The Declaration of Independence was the foundation of America, societal reform and the constitutional government. The founding fathers intended it to represent all the rights innate to man and mans place in nature and society, with a principal concept of democracy. The main ideas presented in the Declaration of Independence can be organized under the following four interconnecting topics: democracy, the rights of man, the individual in society and the government. Democracy was the elementary principal of the document. It states clearly that all men are equal, and can vote with respect to leadership and governance. The fathers also included what was believed to be the God given rights of man by birth- entitlement to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

However, no man had justification to violate any of the laws that appeared in the Declaration. Included in these rights were mans moral duties to society, ensuring that insecure government was overthrown and that all the rights were protected to contribute to a better society. The individual in society was extremely important, as it was considered above all else, especially the collective. Society also provided the security and protection of the individual.

The government role was detailed very specifically. It declared that the government must secure the rights of man, with its power emanating from the people themselves and that long standing government systems could not be overthrown easily. The fathers did not support the concept of a monarchy, rivaling England's traditional method of political rule by birthright. They believed it was not based on appropriate judicial ability and that the monarch could be corrupt or tyrannical. They wanted their countrys political power to be distributed among its best. Despite being virtuous and with good intent, many anomalies occurred.

There was conflict between what had been recorded and what was practiced. The document stated that all men are equal and have the right to vote and that they are entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. However, this became extremely exclusive and only applied in practice to white, landowning males over the age of 21. Women, blacks and white men under the required age did not have these declared rights. The Declaration was further violated by the institution of slavery. These simple violations meant that many of the statements in the Declaration were transgressed.

For example, the overthrowing of improper government could not be ensured, or the protection and security of the individual that society was to provide etc. The actual practice of society was therefore prejudiced, racist and sexist, exactly what the fathers had written it to prevent. In establishing a society, the fathers would have known that a single document, although moral, ethical, honest and sound in theory, could not completely erase their controversial societal issues. The extent to which they were abused was probably underestimated, as they believed America, being the New World, would be the perfect country, being so convinced that the people would immediately obey their written rights. The rights of American men, being so meticulously laid out, would also be open for people to contradict them. America was to be known as the land of the free, and the fathers wanted a country free from prejudice, but also free of spirit.

We can be assured that it was approached with good intent and it was the beginning of real reform, that the fathers had laid a solid foundation for American society.
