Who Killed Willy Loman? Will Loman, the salesman, portrayed as one of the great specimens of the modern age hard working middle class men. He was a man who loved his wife and children and was dedicated to his career in his search for success, but like all other men he had his claim to contradicting qualities. Willy? s own faults and Willy?

s own damaged characteristics lead him to his demise. Willy? s excessive praise to dignity pushed him along the border of death. Willy Loman was very concerned by how other people regarded him. ? Yeah, but there? s no bones in a heartburn. ? -Charley?

What are you talkin? about? Do you know the first thing about it? ? -Willy (pg. 42). Willy and Charley are discussing Charley? s heartburn.

Willy makes a remark that Charley has got to learn to take his vitamins to build his bones. Charley answers back correcting Willy? s obvious mistake. Willy takes offense to his reply and answers back with an attack on Charley.

Charley has contradicted Willy? s personal knowledge, and Willy, being a proud man, will scorn this remark that he is anything but knowledgeable. Another perspective on Willy? s insulted dignity is the character of Charley, whom is another man representing different beliefs, exactly opposite in beliefs to Willy, and Willy being his confident self will not allow this other man to intrude on Willy? s? rightness? .

This shows of the seriousness of Willy? s concern to uphold his dignity. Moreover, this poor proud man? s own self classification, and self love put himself out of a job that could have saved his life. ? I don? t want your goddam job! ? -Willy?

When the hell are you going to grow up? ? -Charley (pg. 97). After being offered a generous job which would no doubt lower Willy? s position in his own eyes, Willy turns down the opportunity because he could not accept anything that would diminish his dignity. Willy Loman's personal pride was a vital point to Willy? s character that could have altered his end, and even allow for it to of turned out happy had he been more flexible. In addition, Willy?

s excessive reliance upon the myth of the American Dream is his crucial flaw that leads him to his death. ? In the greatest country in the world a man with such- personal attractiveness gets lost. ? -Willy (pg 16). This is a principal example of Willy? s overly empathetic trust in the American dream. It demonstrates Willy? s theory that good looks, or a strong personality will obtain success in the human?

s world. The fact that Willy does not believe anything outside of his theory to be a possibility for success shows how deep his belief in the American Dream really goes. Willy had such a belief in his dream, that he had pulled the wool so far over his eyes, he did not have one shred of sense of reality. This very trustworthy nature concerning his dream had taken away his joy of perhaps enrolling in a career he could love, it had taken away the proper knowledge for his children to grow up understanding life, it had taken away his life. Willy? s belief in the American dream was so much so as to no only bring about the ruin of his life, but was the final blow to make possible his undoing. ?

Can you imagine that magnificence with twenty thousand dollars in his pocket. ? -Willy (pg. 135) Willy decided to kill himself so that his family could live off the insurance money because the money is what will make his life, or maybe more accurately their lives, a success. Willy feels inheriting wealth quickly is a symbol of success, and that event is his very the very definition of his American dream. A hint of Willy? s theory of the American dream can be seen as he says? magnificence. ?

Willy? s excessive reliance upon the myth of the American Dream these skeptical success formulas, his self-knowledge of the American dream, is his ultimate flaw that leads him to his death. However, the ultimate bombshell of all Willy? s characteristics that spelled out his end, was his unwillingness to realize the pattern of errors surrounding his world. ? It? s alright.

I came back. ? ? I got as far as a little above Yonkers. I stopped for a cup of coffee. Maybe it was the coffee. ? -Willy (pg. 12) Willy was on a sales trip in New York. He got only as far as Yonkers and yet he says he? s alright.

Willy was a salesman, and a statement like that one could be comparatively close to a fish in a tank without water saying, ? I? m fine. ? Another example of Willy? s misinterpretation of events occurred when Willy was caught cheating on Linda by Biff, whom failed math and, consequently flunked out of high school. ?

I gave you an order! ? -Willy (pg. 121) When a man is caught cheating on his wife by his son, a man must ask himself, ? What am I doing. ? A mundane man will come to a realization, after deep questioning of the soul, and try to seek redemption by correcting his mistake. Sadly, Willy goes on as if nothing has happened.

He remains oblivious to the fact that what he has done is wrong, whereby, maintaining an existence in self-denial. There was definitely a pattern surrounding Willy, but because he was terribly reluctant to question his mistakes he remained the drummer in an absurd plot, his American dream, that costed him the greatest price, his life. Willy Loman? s own misjudgment, and faults, and own value and beliefs, that is essentially Willy himself, cleared the way for Willy? s final gesture, his death bed.

Willy? s trust in dignity was crucial flaw in his fall. A second key that opened the door to Willy? s coffin was his overly emphatic trust in his personal theory of the American dream.

The final blow, that sealed his coffin door, was an unwillingness to recognize his fault. The lone murderer of Willy Loman was Willy.
