Nobody dust blame this man. A Salesman has got to dream boy. It comes with the territory How does Charley s statement summarise the issues of the play. Death of a Salesman is about a disillusioned salesman that is living in a world that is far from reality. Willy is living in a world where he sees himself as successful, popular, rich and one of the best salesman in the country. This is far from the truth.

Willy s failure in life has led him to dream of what he really wants. This has led to a very warped self image. Willy believes he is one of the best salesman in the country, where he is well know everywhere and very popular. This is far from reality, and Willy has trouble seeing the truth. This is evident when he says, You take me, for instance. I never have to wait in line to see a buyer.

Willy Loan is here! That s all they have to know, and I go right through. Willy thinks he is very successful and well known all over the country, which is only part of his dream. Willy is very disillusioned with life. He is angry that things are the way they are. He wishes to live the life of the American dream.

His anger and frustration with life is revealed when he says Figure it out. Work a lifetime to pay off a house. You finally own it, and there s nobody to live in it. Willy just wishes he can be successful and this is why he dreams about living the American dream and being rich. However, this dreaming leads Willy into a further world of his own, and further from the truth of reality. Willy is like many other people.

They form a dream, and when they don t accomplish it, they break down. This is shown in Willy s character when he has flashbacks to the past. He wants to change the past, but nothing can be done about it. Willy tends to remember his past failures, but forgets his achievements. This causes a huge negative build up in his character, which ultimately led to his downfall. An example of him not forgetting the past is when he says to Charley I got nothing to give him, Charley, I m clean, I m clean.

Willy is having a flashback and remembering his failure. He also blames himself for Biff flunking Maths. Willy s dream is severely affecting his judgement on life. Charley offers himself a job on numerous occasions, but Willy declines in self pride.

Charley: You want a job? Willy: I got a job, I told you that. Willy really has no job, but he continues to believe that his job without pay still counts as a job. Willy s self pride and his illusion stops him from admitting that he really is a failure and is in need of money. He continues to borrow money of Charley and claiming that he will pay it all back to him.

Willy s fantasy world is also revealed when he is talking to Howard about the voice recorder. Howard says, they re only a hundred and a half. Willy knows that there is no way that he can afford this but still continues his self dignity and says I think I ll get one myself. The flaw in Willy s character that ultimately led to his downfall was not that he had a dream, but that he knew he hadn t and couldn t achieve it, but continued to act and think that he had. Throughout the play Willy s character deteriorates and worsens as he drift further and further into his fantasy world.

As he drifts into this world, the ever approaching choice of suicide gets closer. Willy could no longer live his dream and ended his life.
