Explore the use of irony in Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman. Throughout the play, irony is used to emphasis the tragic nature of the situation, particularly during scenes where there is confusion between appearance and reality. On one tangent, the play as a whole can be considered to be an attack on the capitalist system to which Willy Loan tries so hard to conform successfully to. Willy is a prime example of a victim to consumerist hype, the American tradition of oneupmanship- success being measured by material possessions rather than self-satisfaction. Willy inflicts his views on success onto his sons, who in turn become a part of the American Dream scene, but ironically, the events of the play make failure inevitable for the Loans- a direct contradiction to the whole concept of success by living to certain ideas and concepts, and also expectations. The majority of Willys relationships contain a certain degree of irony in terms of his expectations for their futures or his present treatment of them.
Biffs role throughout the play is a perfect example of this concept. Although Willys memory is not a reliable basis for the actual truth, his interpretation portrays Biff as being an ideal candidate for success. He is a high school sports figure, and his popularity, in Willys mind, is the key to a successful life and car
