Date Rape by Katie Roiphe and On Not Being a Victim by Mary Gaitskill debate the issue of date rape. Both authors, with the use of personal opinion and other women s opinions, state their views on the subject. While Katie Roiphe argues that rape should be limited to physical force, Gaitskill criticizes that opinion. According to her, any woman with psychic disorders after unwanted sexual experience can be considered raped. Although the writers use a similar structure in writing the articles and discuss the same topic, their definitions of date rape differ. Roiphe and Gaitskill s essays both discuss the debate over definitions of date rape using a very similar structure.

Roiphe begins her essay using her personal experience as an introduction to the subject. She recollects reading a poster in college, which promotes a statistic that one in four women on campus are raped. I remember standing outside the dinning hall in college, looking at a purple poster with this statistic written in bold letters (Roiphe 156). Then, throughout the article she quotes opinions of scholars or rape victims to support her arguments.

For example she mentions Professor Neil Gilbert who questions the validity of one-in-four women as rape victims (157), the statistic criticized by Roiphe in her example. Another element of form in Date Rape is the length. It is exactly ten pages long. Side by side, Gaitskill s essay has the same structure.

Her article has the same length. She also introduces the subject of date rape in her work with a personal experience. In the early 1970 s I had an experience that could be described as acquittance rape (Gaitskill 172). Finally, just like Roiphe, Gaitskill uses a lot of quotes. People like Camille Paglia, author of Sexual Personae (172), or Wendy Kaminer, author of I m Dysfunctional, You re Dysfunctional to support her view. Besides the similarity in the structural aspects of Date Rape and On Not Being a Victim, the articles discuss the same subject.

Roiphe determines the definition of date rape. She also attempts to find the causes of the phenomenon as well as separate the cry babies from the real victims. Furthermore, the writer mentions organizations involved in the social debate on the issue like the rape-crisis feminists. She points out the disadvantages they create. There is a danger in new rules Rape crisis feminists threaten the progress that s been made. They are chasing the same stereotype our mothers spent so much energy escaping (Roiphe 165).

While the rape crisis feminists try to set a standard definition of date rape to include psychic pain rather than just physical force, Roiphe argues that this will make women a stereotype. They will be considered a defenseless minority with need of special attention. Not only does Mary Gaitskill explore the rape date issue, but also she addresses the same topics as Roiphe. She recognizes the true victims of date rape. But to speak in exaggerated metaphors about psychic pain, it is not so much the act of cry baby, as it is the dissected attempt to explain one s own experience (Gaitskill 173). She claims that women suffer from mental pain after date rape not because they make it up, but because they try to deal with it.

There also exist other similarities between the essays. Like Roiphe, Mary Gaitskill determines the definition of date rape, and she discusses the views of date rape feminists. Even though they both discuss the same topic, the writers have very different opinions on the definition of date rape. While Roiphe believes that date rape should be limited to physical force, Gaitskill expands its boundaries to include psychic pain.

Roiphe claims that if are going to maintain an idea of rape, than we need to reserve it for instances of physical violence (Roiphe 64). She further implies her disapproval of any other explanation. People have asked me if I have ever been raped. And thinking back on complicated nights, too many glasses of wine, on strange and familiar beds, I would have to say yes.

With such a sweeping definition of rape, I wonder how many people are there, male or female, who haven t been date raped at one point or another (163). Her sarcastic explanation leads her to conclude that because of such a wide variety of definitions of date rape, anyone can falsely claim being raped. In contrast, Gaitskill believes that any psychic disorder developed from an unwanted sexual experience should be considered rape. Emotional cruelty is more complicated.

Its motives are often impossible to understand, and is sometimes committed by people who say they like you or even love you (Gaitskill 174). She thinks that women don t have to be physically abused to suffer. Cruel intentions and the lack of explanation of why it happened cause much greater pain. Gaitskill moves even further to make her point. She directly criticizes and reacts to Roiphe's comment: Even though she says she had an experience that many would call a date rape, she cannot understand or even quite believe, that anyone else would feel violated in similar circumstances (Gaitskill 173). She accuses Roiphe of being inconsiderate.

Just because she doesn t feel hurt by unwanted sex, does not mean that someone else can t. The differences between Roiphe and Gaitskill s definitions of rape are so different, that there is no room for agreement. Their definitions are almost opposite of each other. Roiphe feels that date rape is physical force. Gaitskill thinks that it is mental suffering.

However, although their definitions of date rape are very different, the writers use the same structure to write their essays and discuss the same topic. In addition, they also use quotes and opinions of others. DATE RAPE Gaitskill, Mary. On Not Being a Victim: Sex, Rape, and the Trouble With Following Rules. Here and Now. Ed.
