Cyrano de Bergerac Romance has always been a favorite genre of society. Tales of love lost, broken hearts, and emotional reunions never fail to captivate an audience. Edmund Rostand splay, Cyrano de Bergerac, is a classic tale of love untold. The protagonist of the play, Cyrano, is deeply in love with his cousin Roxanne. He is afraid to reveal his love for her because he fears rejection in view of his grotesque nose and struggles inwardly with this fear throughout the play. His character is a complex one, broken down into three main categories: physical, mental, and emotional.

Cyrano is a physically gifted man, especially with the sword. Several times throughout the play he is confronted and often must resort to fighting, something in which he is not lacking. When heckled by Valve about his nose, Cyrano decides that if hill fight, he will have some fun. So, he composes a ballad while he fights. He wins, ofcourse, and everyone is amazed with his talent. Many are often amazed with his nose also.

Cyrano has a rather large nose, and although he is not ashamed of it, he doesn t take people who poke fun lightly. His nose is what hinders him from revealing his true feelings to Roxanne, for he is afraid that she will reject him because of it. If Cyrano is considered gifted physically, then mentally he is superhuman. His way with words is unparalleled by any, and he has the ability to enchant. He is a very eloquent speaker, and he pours out his soul when he writes or speaks, and that quality is what makes him so exceptional. Despite these characteristics, Cyrano struggles inside as he tries tope with his overwhelming love for Roxanne and his fear of rejection.

He uses these feelings to justify his writing the letters for Christian and for helping him win Roxanne The whole time it is tearing him apart inside, and after Christian dies at the battlefront, he conceals these feelings another thirty years, all the while still loving Roxanne as much ashe did when he first saw her. Even when he is dying at the end of the play and Roxannerealizes it was Cyrano who spoke to her under the balcony and wrote all the letters, Cyrano still tries to deny it was ever him because in some corner of his mind he still believes that she might cast him off. Last of all comes the most intricate of Cyrano s personality traits, his emotional side. This should be the easiest part to explain, for almost the whole play centers on his internal conflict over Roxanne.

He can t overcome his seemingly absurd fear of rejection, and this is the one thing he says he could not stand... She might laugh at me; That issue one thing in this world I fear! The one night that he speaks to Roxanne under cover darkness under her balcony is the closest he thinks he will ever get to having her. Hours out his heart and soul into the speech, and captures Roxanne s heart with it. it is Christian, however, who takes the credit. Since it must be, I had rather be myself the cause of...

what must be. This is how Cyrano justifies his actions, and never realizes that he could have Roxanne if he just took the leap. All in all, Cyrano wasn t a complex man, but he can never come to terms with his feelings for Roxanne. This is what makes Cyrano de Bergerac such an infamous play. Everybody can in one way or another relate to Cyrano and his fears. Whether it be fear olive, fear of speaking, or fear of being unique, this play can always be identified with.

Which is why Cyrano de Bergerac will forever be remembered as one of the best-loved plays of all time.
