The Crucible Integrity Essay Honesty, determination, and integrity are all characteristics John Proctor displayed as he fought for his own life and many other innocent people during the Salem witch trials in the play The Crucible. His efforts were needed greatly at the time and his integrity played a major role in calming the chaotic situation of false accusations. His courage to fight for what he knew to be true ended up with his death, but he died a noble and honest man; a man left with his integrity. Prior to the start of the witch trials John Proctor is made out to look like an evil and unholy man.
He cheated on his wife with a young servant girl, didnt attend church on a regular basis, and even plowed on Sunday. However, Proctor still managed to show his integrity and honesty when he cheated on his wife, Elizabeth, because he admitted it to her, and agreed to throw Abigail Williams (the servant girl) out of their home. Integrity starts with knowing what is right from what is wrong and Proctor saw the difference early on in church with the Reverend Parris. Proctor realized that Parris was not a true man of God, but instead a man who was worried with the cosmetics in life, and church, and the goodness of his name in the town. Because he knew these things, Proctor did something uncommon in that time and that was to not attend church weekly. His actions then showed the start of his individuality as a fighter against the unjust ways, and a man who had an honest heart.
When reading The Crucible, the first sign of true integrity in John Proctors character comes near the end of Act II. He and his wife are at home as the men of law entered with a warrant for his wifes arrest. Proctor is astonished by their actions and questions them, and as they argue, Proctors righteous light of integrity begins to shine. Like Jesus questioning the Pharisees worship, Proctor begins to authoritatively ask the men of the court questions. Why do you never wonder if Parris be innocent, or Abigail? Is the accuser always holy now?
Were they born this morning as clean as Gods fingers? His integrity and determination starts to take full form, and by this time, he knows he must be the leader of the brigade against the accusers and the court. The integrity of Proctors character continues as he takes Mary Warren to court. He knows the truth of the witch incident, and like any man with integrity, he can not keep it on his heart. In this incident, one can see Proctors true integrity and individuality because no matter what all the other men believe, he fights for what is right. The only way one can find out if a man truly has integrity and is an honest man is if that man will fight for the truth even if it means his life.
John Proctor did exactly that in The Crucible. Once again, in a Jesus-like act, he ripped the admitting papers up and took the deaths of others on his back with him. He was then killed for no reason (like Jesus) and it cleared family names and made the innocent deaths known. Thank you John Proctor and may God rest your soul.
