Legalization of Marijuana The purpose of this paper is to discuss marijuana and compare both sides of the issue of legalizing marijuana. We have two fractions fighting each other; one of those who are pro-marijuana and those who are anti-marijuana. These two factions have been fighting on this issue in the halls of justice for years, each coming up with new reasons why they are the right ones. Pro marijuana legalization groups such as the Physicians Association for AIDS Care and the National Lymphoma Foundation argue that marijuana should be legalized in order to treat terminally ill patients. Among them are the AIDS victims who find that marijuana stimulates their appetites so they can fight off dangerous emaciation; glaucoma sufferers who have used marijuana and aid that it has prevented them from going blind, and cancer patients for whom it alleviates the severe nausea that often accompanies chemotherapy and sometimes makes lifesaving treatment impossible. Due to all those lobbying groups that have shown substantial evidence that marijuana can be used as a prescribed drug, many advocates complain that morphine and cocaine are very dangerous legally prescribed drugs, so why shouldnt marijuana be added to the list.

After all, marijuana is proven to be less harmful then both cocaine and morphine. Many agencies, which are anti marijuana such as the Drug Enforcement Agency and police departments, argue that marijuana should under no circumstances be legalized. The main reason why they do not want it legalized is that there is no hardcore evidence that proves that marijuana is an effective drug as a medicine. In twenty years of research, they have produced no reliable scientific proof that marijuana has medicinal value. The agencies also argue that there is no other medicine that is currently prescribed in the smoking form. They also have conclusions to findings that say that marijuana is actually harmful to some AIDS patients because the active ingredient acutely reduces the number of white blood cells, which are important in fighting off infection.

The Drug Enforcement Agency along with police departments all over the country believe, with the legalization of drugs crime will increase due to a higher increase of pot users which will eventually become addicts and will steal and kill in order to get a fix. These are the main arguments why the drug marijuana should not be legalized Seeing both sides of the issue, I concluded that marijuana should be legalized in order to help people from suffering in cases such as AIDS, cancer, and glaucoma. Prohibition of marijuana over the past decades has not diminished the demand of the drug in the United States. The use of marijuana has acutely risen due to the masses of people in the media, such as Cypress Hill who have promoted the use of marijuana as a social drug. I believe that marijuana is here to stay in our society and that it is only going through the stages that alcohol went through during the prohibition era.

It has already begun that groups are lobbying congress to legalize marijuana, and it is only a matter of time before the drug passes the legalization process. Due to legislation, many states will be able to grow marijuana as a cash crop and make revenue off it. The revenue made from the sales of marijuana will be in the millions, which can be used for drug rehabs and anti drug programs at elementary schools all over the nation. The legalization of marijuana will open new doors in society, culture, and education as a whole. People will realize that the American way is the way to go, and that will ultimately make the United States of America number one in other peoples eyes.
