Jimmy Carter formally known as James Earl Carter, Jr. was born on October 1, 1924 and was the oldest of four children. He was born in a small farming town of Plains, Georgia and grew up in the nearby community if Archery. Jimmy's father, James Earl Carter, Sr. , was a peanut farmer and a storekeeper while his mother, Lillian Gordy, was a registered nurse.

Jimmy Carter worked on the farm but as a boy dreamed of attending the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland because his uncle in the United States Navy had sent him postcards of exotic ports. He was the first member of his family ever to go to college. He started at Georgia Southwestern College in 1941 for only a year. Then followed by a year at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946.

Later, he then went to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, graduating in 1946, ranked 60 th in a class of 820. On July 7, 1946 Carter married Rosalynn Smith who was his high school sweetheart, also from Plains. When Jimmy's father died in 1953, he resigned his naval commission and returned to Plains. Rosalynn became a big part in his life, from the peanut farming business to politics. He worked on his own farm and his wife operated the Warehouse, a general-purpose seed and farm supply company. They had three sons, John William, James Earl Carter III, and Done Jeffery, and a daughter, Amy Lynn.

Carter became involved in the affairs of the community, serving as chairman of the county school board and the 1 st president of the Georgia Planning Association. He won the election to the Georgia State in 1962. He lost his first gubernatorial campaign in 1966, but then won the next election which made him Georgias 76 th governor on January 12, 1971. For the 1974 congressional elections he was the Democratic National Committee campaign chairman.

Carter apparently decided as early as 1972, halfway through his four-year term as governor, that he would attempt to run for presidency of the United States. Not long after the 1972 election Carters campaign manger drew up a detailed campaign strategy. He followed the plan very closely. As soon as the gubernatorial term ended he began campaigning In 1975 when Carter announced he was a candidate for president he had almost no national reputation. Nine other Democratic candidates were in the nomination race.

Some of them have been in national politics for decades. Carters ability to win votes was evident. But he won his partys nomination on the first ballot at he 1976 Democratic National Convention and was elected president on November 2, 1976. He did not win by talking about issues but in fact it was because he was so vague.

Oddly enough the most likely to trust Carter were blacks. They gave him more than 90 percent of his votes. Other Democrats were questionable of Carter as a Southerner and a man who seemed to be funding against his own party. Labor leaders were not anxious to support him because he was a businessman from an antiunion state. He gained some support by confirming national health insurance and a bill to guarantee a job for all Americans who wanted one. Public opinion polls immediately gave Carter a huge lead.
