Cloning: Right Or Wrong? Cloning, humans have recently achieved the ability to clone animals. What exactly is cloning? The term clone refers to a group of organisms that are genetically identical.

Now don t get me wrong cloning has been going on for hundreds of millions of years its just that recently humans have unlocked the mysteries behind cloning. Cloning first began when the very first cell that grew and evolved into what we are today, depending on your views of evolution or if you believe in the religious thoughts. Anyway, cloning is done, and has been done by bacteria and other organisms since the beginning of time, they achieve cloning by asexual reproduction most often. But humans are different then bacteria which I m sure your aware of. Humans undergo different changes in development from when they begin as a fertilized embryo. Somewhere along the line of development humans undergo a type of cell differentiating that makes it so that a s soon as some cells go off to do there jobs such as a blood cell making blood, that is all it will do it can t go and make skin cells, and this is where scientists have the problems with human cloning, getting past that certain differentiating stage.

Cloning isn t really a new thing to humans, we ve been doing it with plants for a long time. But cloning animals is a different story. Recently the first mammal cloned was a sheep named dolly, which again I m sure your aware of. However since then us humans have had great success with cloning other mammals especially cows. As a matter of fact on two separate occasions one on February 16, in the United States a cow named Gene was successfully cloned.

Also on July 5, a cow was cloned into two calves in Japan. On another note Mice were successfully cloned on July 22, at the University of Hawaii. It may sound weird that an animal like a mouse would be more difficult to clone than a cow, yet a lot of it has to do with the number of people trying to find ways to clone certain types of animals, mammals in this case. And probably the most important case of cloning to animal conservationists is the cloning of a near-extinct species of cow in New Zealand on August 19, 1998. Now with all of today s technology, would it be possible to clone humans? Most likely by the year 2000 with the advance rate at which the field of Biotechnology is moving forward at cloning of humans would be possible.

Now on to the real issues of Human cloning. The arguments that surround the very controversial topic of cloning. Most likely the problem soon won t be that of being able to actually clone a human but the questions that arise from protesters of the subject. People who are Pro-Cloning have as many reasons for allowing cloning as those reasons that are supplied by Cloning Critics. Pro-Cloning Voices say that if cloning was available that we could treat the number one killer in America and other industrialized countries, which is heart disease. They believe that with cloning technology we could take healthy heart cells, clone them, and place them back in the damaged area of the heart enabling the heart to have a better chance for greater recovery.

Also With new breakthroughs everyday cloning could serve as making things such as skin cells for someone who has been severely burned and also to make brain cells for people with brain damage. Cloning could also be used to make lungs, hearts, livers, kidneys, etc. to help people who have defective or need transplants of those organs. By being able to produce all the cells, they claim that tissues could be produced and diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, Parkinson s disease, and Alzheimer s disease may be able to be cured. They also claim that infertile couples would have a better chance of having kids. Another benefit, and probably one of the first in which it would be used to help, is to produce bone marrow for children and grown-ups with leukemia which is a major deal.

Other disease that they believe it may be able to help are: cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, quadriplegics and paraplegics. People who are against cloning have many reasons to fight. They mainly believe that by allowing cloning that it will become to widespread and by that time no laws would be able to stop it because the knowledge of cloning would be known by so many. They believe that even though it may be able to help some people they believe it will just keep going further and further and they believe that we shouldn t mess with what god blesses us with. Another one of the controversial subjects of cloning are the ethics behind it. Questions arise when you mention the subjects of cloning.

If your to clone humans who are the subjects supposed to be? Do they understand the facts and what cloning means to them being one of a kind? unless they were fully aware of all the things behind it would they then be allowed to volunteer, and the keyword there is volunteer, there is no way that the government or private companies should be able to pick people and tell them that they are going to participate as a guinea pig. I believe that cloning should be legal in some sense but should be closely regulated by the government so that there is no un-ethical practices going on.

In my opinion I believe that cloning should be allowed because even if the scientists can help one person by what their doing it would be worth it. If growing hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys, and growing skin cells and brain cells, or by making tissues and making bone marrow for sick children would benefit human kind I don t see why it shouldn t be legal. However, I believe that in no way, shape, or form should there be any full body cloning, unless its on animals which is all fine and good. But on humans it is flat-out immoral. The beauty of being at the top of the food chain is that we are all special in one way or another and if we were to take that away from one person, what s to stop us from taking it from another, and another, and where would it stop then? The fact is that it wouldn t and that s why we must prevent it from happening altogether.

Now I believe that if growing an organ for a person who is capable of living then we shouldn t hesitate but if it is because someone is dead and we want to have them back alive then that is all wrong, because you may be able to clone looks and insides and stuff like that but they wont be the same personality-wise that is one thing that cloning cannot accomplish. If cloning was to be used to clone animals such as endangered, or animals that have desirable characteristics then that should be allowed that way for instance a good milk-producing cow could benefit farmers if they are willing to pay the price to have them cloned. Either way you look at it there is always going to be controversy surrounding the issues of cloning and I m sure it will be a long time before the decision of whether or not it would be legal. Everyone will always have their own opinion and you will probably never be able to change it. However, if you don t have an opinion listen to both sides of the issues don t rely on what someone tells you to think, you are your own person and after listening to them form your own opinion, who knows it may be totally different from anyone else s.

There s only one thing that, no matter what side you choose or if you don t choose a side at all, you need to know, and that is the facts, nothing else.
