The life of Charles Dickens, one of the most remarkable men was born on February 7, 1812 to John and Elizabeth Dickens. (Davis, pg. 332). Charles Dickens had a talent in the field of writing that was unlike that of any other man in his time. He had a gift that he shared with the rest of the world and has survived for decades. He lived a short, yet successful life devoted writing. He wrote many famous and enjoyable books that people read to this day. Charles John Huffam Dickens was born February 7, 1812, in Ports Mouth, Hampshire.

During his infancy, his family moved to Chatham, where he spent his happiest years and often refers to this time period in his novels. (Davis, pg. 411) From 1822 to 1860 he lived in London, after which he permanently moved to a quiet country cottage in Glads Hill, on the outskirts of Chatham. His father was a clerk in the navy pay office and was well paid, but his living style often brought the family to financial disaster. The family finally reached a point where they couldnt support themselves at all in 1824. Charles was taken out of school and sent to work in a factory doing manual labor, while his father went to prison for his debt. Charles refers to his working experiences in his writings. Although he hated doing labor, he gained knowledge and information about the life of the labor class.

He also brings forth the images of prison, the lost and oppressed children in many novels. His schooling ended at 15, and he became a clerk in a solicitors office, then a short hand reporter in the law courts and finally he became a newspaper reporter in which he got his first taste of journalism and enjoyed it. Finally in 1836, he wrote two plays and a pamphlet. He then resigned from his newspaper job, and undertook the editing job of a monthly magazine, Bentley's Miscellany, in which he wrote Oliver Twist. By this time, the first of Catherine and his nine children had been born. (Kaplan, 312 - 341) His reading tour was abandoned on April 1869, when he collapsed. He began writing another novel in the London Hospital, and gave short farewell sessions of readings in London, ending with the famous speech, From these garish lights I vanish now for evermore.

Charles Dickens died suddenly at Gads Hill on June 9, 1870, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. (Davis, 440) People all over the world mourned the loss of a great entertainer, a creative artist, and one of the greatest authors of all time. Charles Dickens is regarded as the greatest English novelist. He had a wider popularity than any other author before him or during his lifetime. His works were enjoyed by everyone. The quality of his work allowed his fame to spread world wide. His popularity has never ceased, and he is popular to this day, as he ever was.

His compassion and intelligence improved his novels and made him one of the great influences of the 19 th century literature.
